NEW ORLEANS -- Anthony Davis is off to the best start of his young career, but the New Orleans Pelicans superstar acknowledged mounting frustrations after a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks dropped his team to 0-4 overall and 0-3 at home this season.Definitely frustrating, Davis said after Tuesdays 117-113 defeat. We cant get a win. Its frustrating.Davis finished with 35 points and 15 rebounds in the loss, pushing his season averages to 37 points and 13 rebounds per game, both career highs. The 23-year-olds 148 total points are the most in NBA history through the first four games of the season by a player whose team lost all of those games, according to ESPN Stats and Information research.Im frustrated, but Ive got to find a solution, Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. I cant be frustrated to the point of where I throw up my hands and not anythings going on. Its my job. Thats why they hired me here. Ive got to find a solution to our problems. Ive got to find a solution to why were turning the ball over. Ive got to find a solution as to why we cant go into the game with a defensive plan and stick to it. Its very frustrating, yeah. But there have got to be solutions.Despite high expectations heading into last season, an injury-riddled Pelicans team lost its first six games and 11 of its first 12 before ultimately finishing a disappointing 12th in the Western Conference at 30-52. Davis missed a career-high 21 games, including the final 14 of the campaign to undergo an ultrasonic debridement of his left knee.Im not worried about last year, Davis said. Im focused on this year, trying to get a win. But its frustrating. Whatever we need to do, we need to do it fast.Despite Davis strong play, the Pelicans entered Tuesdays game ranked second to last in the NBA in offensive efficiency and last in 3-point shooting. New Orleans shot a season-high 34.6 percent from the 3 line against the Bucks, but its 14th-ranked defense allowed 58 points in the paint and a backbreaking 3-pointer to Giannis Antetokounmpo to extend its deficit to five points with 1:34 left to play.We played hard, but we got to start playing a lot smarter, Gentry said. We just have too many defensive breakdowns. Were not talking, so were not switching where were supposed to [and were] leaving open 3-point shooters. Were not talking on back screens, so we end up giving up a layup. These are all things that are very correctable and things that we go over every day that we just got to get better at. Theres no excuse for not talking defensively. The Pelicans, who are without starters Jrue Holiday (personal), Tyreke Evans (right knee) and Quincy Pondexter (left knee) to start the season, are one of five NBA teams still without a win and one of two teams with four losses. As far as our team goes, our margin of error is slim, said Pelicans point guard Tim Frazier. We got one guy that can go out there and get a bucket, get 50 points. But other than that, us other guys just need to step up. Cavaliers Jerseys Outlet . MILWAUKEE -- Despite the pampered lifestyle of a major league baseball player -- chartered planes, first-class hotels -- road trips can be a drain, especially when flying from one side of the country to another. But while all ballplayers are anxious to get back home after a long road trip, there are few MLB players who enjoy playing in their own ballpark more than Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis.Nieuwenhuis is batting just .212 on the season and depending on how you look at it, that number could be a lot better or astonishingly worse when one takes a look at Nieuwenhuis home/road splits. On the road, Nieuwenhuis is batting a paltry .143 (16-for-130) with a home run, seven doubles and 10 RBI. But back at Miller Park, Nieuwenhuis has been a machine, posting a .304 average (38-for-125) with nine doubles, nine home runs, a triple and 24 RBI.Its pretty impressive, the numbers at home, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. Theyre mind-boggling, really, the differences. Its a hard one to explain, and Im not going to be able to explain it.Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-18 on Milwaukees recent road trip, appearing in five of six games against the Padres and Diamondbacks.Ive just tried to change my mentality a little bit, Nieuwenhuis said. Ive just been pressing a lot the last three or four weeks.Ive tried to take it one pitch at a time and see where that takes me.Nobody would appreciate an offensive outburst more than right-hander Zach Davies, who takes the mound Monday looking for his fourth consecutive start in fifth in his llast five decisions.ddddddddddddDavies hasnt allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last five outings, posting a 1.97 ERA with 21 strikeouts and six walks in 32 innings during that stretch. When he gets into a groove, he runs through a lineup pretty good, Counsell said.Hell be facing the Braves for the first time in his career.Atlantas scheduled starter, rookie right-hander Rob Whalen, will go for his first career victory. He made his major league debut Aug. 3, allowing four runs on four hits -- including a home run -- and four walks with five strikeouts over five innings of work, but didnt take a decision in Atlantas 8-4 victory over the Pirates. He allowed all four runs in the first inning, but settled in quickly after that.Obviously the game didnt start how either of us hoped it would, but the end result was exactly what we were looking for, said Braves catcher Anthony Recker. He did a great job getting through that first inning and then just bearing down and making pitches after that.I just told him we were still behind him and we were going to come back and win the game, just keep pitching your butt off and we got ya. And he did that.Whalen was having a strong year in Atlantas minor league system, going a combined 7-6 with a 2.40 ERA for Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett, where he made three starts and allowed just four runs in 18 2/3 innings of work while striking out 18. Kevin Durant is joining the Golden State Warriors.Saying he has experienced by far the most challenging few weeks in my professional life, Durant announced his decision to leave the?Oklahoma City Thunder?on Monday in a post on The Players Tribune.Durant is expected to sign a two-year, $54.3 million contract, sources told ESPNs Marc Stein. The deal will include a player option after the first year. The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player -- as that has always steered me in the right direction, Durant wrote. But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth. With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to join the Golden State Warriors. After Durant signs with Golden State, two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry will be the fourth-highest-paid player on the Warriors. Durant will be No. 1, followed by Klay Thompson ($16.6 million), Draymond Green ($15.3 million) and Curry ($12.1 million), who can become a free agent after next season.Green told The Undefeateds Marc J. Spears in a text message that he was ecstatic the Warriors landed Durant. He tweeted to express his enthusiasm about his new teammate.Im excited about the opportunity to add one of the best players in the world to our team and welcome him to our brotherhood! This will be some of the best times of our life, and Im looking forward to it, he wrote.Durants contract can be finalized Thursday, when the leaguewide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted.Warriors coach Steve Kerr was in Hawaii and said he learned about Durants decision to join Golden State via The Players Tribune, ESPNs Ramona Shelburne reported. The Warriors plan to renounce their rights to Harrison Barnes, sources told Stein, to help clear the salary-cap space needed to sign Durant. That will make Barnes an unrestricted free agent on Thursday. Barnes, sources told Stein, remains on course to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, who reached a verbal agreement with the 24-year-old on a?four-year max deal worth $94.4 million, no matter what happened with Durant. The Mavericks also have agreed to a trade with the Warriors to acquire center Andrew Bogut and his 2016-17 contract, with a base value of just over $11 million. Just before Durants Players Tribune post, Bogut removed references to the Warriors from his Twitter page.Golden State will renounce its rights to center Festus Ezeli, which will make him an unrestricted free agent, but?guard?Shaun Livingston?was told by the Warriors that?he wont be traded, sources told Spears. Golden State also agreed to a one-year, $2.9 million deal with?Zaza Pachulia, according to a report by The Vertical.Thunder general manager Sam Presti expressed his teams disappointment over Durants departure in a statement.Kevin made an indelible mark on the Thunder organization and the state of Oklahoma as a founding father of this franchise, Presti said. We cant adequately articulate what he meant to the foundation of this franchise and our success. While clearly disappointing that he has chosen to move on, the core values that he helped establish only lead to us thanking him for the many tangible and intangible ways that he helped our program.Presti later said?the team had a pretty good idea that Durant was moving on even before its final meeting with him in the Hamptons on Sunday.Even when we were relatively sure it probably wasnt going to go our way, eight staff members and our owner stayed overnight in New York just to be there and to kind of finish it out, Presti said at a news conference in Oklahoma City on Monday evening.Weve been there for every first in his career, and we wanted to finish it out the right way by being present whenever that decision was made, regardless of how it turned out.Presti said he was alerted to Durants final choice in a phone call from Durant on Monday morning a few minutes before the announcement. It was disappointing, it was hurtful; but at the end of the day, it was what he felt was best for him, Presti said. The Thunder will take some time before making any roster decisions, particularly related to All-Star point guard?Russell Westbrooks future, sources told ESPNs Brian Windhorst. The biggest catch on the free-agent market, Durant met with six teams over the past three days: Oklahoma City, Golden State, San Antonio, Boston, Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Warriors held their meeting with Durant on Friday.?On Saturday, Durant spoke with NBA legend Jerry West, a member of the Warriors executive board, on the phone, sources told ESPNs Chris Broussard. West outlined the reasons he thought Golden State would be the ideal fit for the superstar forward.Durant, 27, has spent all nine seasons of his career with the Thunder organization. He won the MVP in 2014, has been named first--team All--NBA five times and has made seven All--Star teams. He has appeared in four Western Conference finals and one NBA Finals, in which he lost in five games to the Heat in 2012.Im from Washington D.C. originally, but Oklahoma City truly raised me, Durant wrote. It taught me so much about family, as well as what it means to be a man. There are no words to express what the organization and the community mean to me and what they will represent in my life and in my heart forever. The memories and friendships are something that go far beyond the game. Those invaluable relationships are what made this deliberation so challenging. It really pains me to know that I will disappoint so many people with this choice, but I believe I am doing what I feel is the right thing at this point in my life and my playing career.Durant bounced back last season to earn second--team All-NBA honors after undergoing three surgeries to repair a Jones fracture on his right foot suffered before the 2014--15 season, in which he was limited to 27 games before undergoing a season--ending bone graft procedure in March. Without Durant, the Thunder missed the postseason. With Durant back for 72 games last season, the Thunder improved to 55-27 and finished third in the West. The Thunder beat the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the opening round, upset the 67--win Spurs in six games in the second round and pushed the Warriors to seven games in the Western Conference finals.Durant averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists last season, and he scored at least 20 points in 67 straight games. In nine seasons, Durant has averaged 27.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.Golden State set an NBA regular-season record with 73 wins and led the league in scoring last season, but the Warriors fell just short of a repeat NBA title and lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games.ESPN staff writer Royce Young and The Associated Press contributed to this report. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Odell Beckham Jr. wants the ball any way he can get it.If that means the big-play wide receiver adds the job of returning punts for the New York Giants, hes up for it.Beckham showed what he could do as a returner in the fourth quarter of the Giants 27-13 win over Cleveland on Sunday, fielding Britton Colquitts 54-yard punt, finding an opening in the converging Browns, and then cutting across the field for a 59-yard touchdown return .It was typical Beckham. He turned nothing into something and woke up the Giants. The touchdown was nullified by Mark Herzlichs holding penalty, but it again showed how much of a game breaker Beckham can be.Dont forget he also caught two touchdowns against Cleveland as the Giants (8-3) ran their winning streak to six games.Hopefully we get another chance to run some back, Beckham said Wednesday, looking forward to Sundays game in Pittsburgh. Its something Ive been doing pretty much all my life. Ive done punt return and kick return. Its just what it is. Its just another opportunity. They punt it and that ball is going straight to you. Your teammates are out there making the blocks. You just have to make cuts off of them.Beckham said returning and getting the feel for the ball helps him get going on offense.Hopefully you dont get hit but you get an opportunity to get tackled, said the 24-year-old, whose 65 catches are tied for seventh in the league. Its a lot of fun. Its something that I do enjoy. Hopefully I can help this team out in that way or whatever way I can.Beckham has practiced fielding punts all season. Dwayne Harris has handled the job almost all season, but he has been bothered by a wrist injury and running back Bobby Rainey handled the job against the Browns.Rainey fumbled a punt in the second quarter and Beckham took over in the second half, averaging 11.7 yards on three returns.Steelers coach Mike Tomlin saw the videotape of Beckham returning punts and was impressed. He needs no endorrsement from me, he looks like a dangerous guy, Tomlin said.dddddddddddd Guys like him, theyre capable of distinguishing themselves regardless of what you ask them to do. Hes a competitor, a skilled athlete, a playmaker, and thats what they do.Harris isnt sure whether he will be able to return punts this week, but he added his wrist is feeling better.Coach Ben McAdoo said he will make a decision on a punt returner later in the week.Beckham injured a thumb against the Browns last week in the first half but he played through it. He is not worried about it, or even the prospect that he might be hurt returning punts. Its a job that rarely is done by a teams best skilled player. You could do that playing football or crossing the street, Beckham said of the potential for injury. Its part of life. I dont really worry about being hurt at all. Its in Gods hands.I put the best preparation in my body that I can and take care of it the best that I can in order to go out there and not get hurt. Me being back there on punt return, getting hurt or anything like that is not really something Im worried about. It can happen on any play.Game notes RB Shane Vereen has been designated for return from injured reserve and practiced for the first time since tearing a triceps against Washington (Sept. 25). LAS VEGAS -- Houston (9-3, AAC) vs. San Diego State (10-3, MWC), Las Vegas, 3:30 p.m. EST (ABC)Line: Houston by 4.Series Record: Houston leads 2-0.WHATS AT STAKEHouston can win 10 games in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history while also starting the Major Applewhite era on a positive note, as the offensive coordinator and former Texas quarterback was promoted to replace Austin-bound Tom Herman as head coach. A victory by SDSU would tie the school record for wins, first set in 1969 under coach Don Coryell and matched last season by Rocky Long. The winning team is also likely to end the season ranked, something SDSU has not accomplished since the 1977 season.KEY MATCHUPHoustons run defense vs. SDSUs tailback tandem of Donnel Pumphrey and Rashaad Penny. In their two marquee games, the Cougars held Oklahoma to 2.7 yards per carry and Louisville to 2.5, but the defensive front was decidedly less effective in their three losses and allowed at least 146 yards rushing in those games. If Pumphrey and Penny can get going early, a duo that rushed for 27 touchdowns this season can not only wear down Houston but keep star quarterback Greg Ward Jr. off the field at the same time.PLAYERS TO WATCHHouston: DL Ed Oliver more than lived up to his lofty billing as a five-star recruit, immediately dissecting the Sooners for two sacks in his collegiate debut. Finishing his freshman season with 19.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and three forced fumbles, Oliver could be a one-man wrecking machine in the AAC for years to come.SDSU: Pumphrey couldnt get traction with Heisman voters despite rushing for 2,018 yards this season, but could finish his career as the most prolific runner in FBS history. Pumphrey needs 108 yards to break former Wisconsin running back Ron Daynes record of 6,397 yards rushing. Pumphrey has run for at least that many yards 10 times this season and 30 overall in his outstanding college career.FACTS & FIGURESPumphrey and Penny can become the first teammates in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 and 1,000 yards in the same season. Penny needs just five yards to crack the 1,000-yard mark. . Ward will be the third Houston quarterback to start three bowl games, joining Case Keenum and Kevin Kolb. . San Diego State and Boise State are the only Group of Five teams to play in seven straight bowl games. . Oliver has nine pass breakups, tied with cornerback Howard Wilson for the team lead. . LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Wyoming running back Brian Hill says he and the offensive line feed off of each others hard work during a game.If I can give them what they need, they can give what I need, Hill said after rushing for 207 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-22 win over UC Davis on Saturday. It is the sixth time Hill has rushed for more than 200 yards in a game during his three-year college career. He is now ranked third on Wyomings all-time rushing list.Hill carried the ball 25 times for an average of 8.3 yards per carry as the Cowboys (2-1) gashed the Aggies defense for 274 rushing yards.Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes as Wyoming dominated its FCS opponent on both sides of the ball.I thought the keys to the game were our ability to control and maintain the line of scrimmage and it got a running game going, Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said.Allen completed 11 of 15 passes for 198 yards. He had TD passes of 16, 39 and 37 yards to three different receivers.UC Davis (1-2) was led by Ben Scott, who completed 18 of 31 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an injury to his left leg. He also had one interception.THE TAKEAWAYAfter throwing five interceptions and fumbling once the previous week at Nebraska, Allen needed to bounce back for his own sake and for the team. On Wyomings first possession against UC Davis, Allen connected for 17 yards to Jacob Hollister and on a 16-yard TD to Tanner Gentry. Allen lost a fumble in the second quarter that safety Keleen Culberson returned 21 yards for a score.Allen said he was upset by the fumble that led to a score by the Aggies. As an offense we were able to get past that, he said.He ended the day with no interceptions and no more fumbles while tossing three TD passes.UC Davis entered the game averaging 504.5 yards of total offense thanks to running back Manusamoa Luuga, who averaged 120.5 yards a game, and Scott, who was averaging 342 yards passing a contest. However, against the Cowboys defense, the yards didnt come so easily as the Aggies managed just 74 yards on the ground and Scott was held to 178 yards total passing.Offensively, we couldnt get the run game going, Aggies coach Ron Gould said. I knew going in they had a really, really good defense. They got us on our heels a little bit.NOTABLESWyoming junior cornerback Rico Gafford had his first interception as a Cowboy and returned it 32 yards to set up Wyomings second touchdown of the game. Defensive end Carl Granderson had a sack and a forced fumble and has now recorded a sack in each of the three games this season. SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder put it simply after his team lost to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, Kawhi Leonard was really good.Leonard scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Spurs avenged their lone loss of the season with a 100-86 victory over the Jazz. The Spurs bounced back from a 15-point home loss to the Jazz on Tuesday after losing just one game in San Antonio all of last season.I expected for them to come out and try to get off to a great start and just sustain, and they did that, Jazz forward Joe Johnson said. After we kind of hit first, they withstood the first five minutes and made a run of their own. We just never really got back.(Leonard) is shooting the ball unbelievable off picks. Hes handling off pick-and-rolls and making plays. Hes been tough to guard. The Jazz jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and an unhappy Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called a timeout just minutes into the game. The Spurs responded with a 29-7 run and the Jazz never led again.Utah got within seven points in the third quarter, but Leonard responded with five quick points and the Jazz never got within single digits the rest of the game.Leonard continued his MVP-caliber season by shooting 9 for 18 from the field while LaMarcus Aldridge added 19 points and six rebounds.Rodney Hood led the Jazz with 18 points, but they shot just 37.5 percent. Its only two games, Popovich said about facing the Jazz twice. F Boris Diaw missed his second consecutive game with a right leg contusion.NO WARMUPSThe Jazz season has started with four playoff teams in their first six games, including the Spurs twice. They hit the road for five straight and seven of nine away from Salt Lake City. The biggest thing for me is, you hope for your team to continue to improve, Snyder said. That is the primary thing. If competition early can accelerate that process, that is a good thing. Theres been times where that competition early can knock you back. So it can go either way.QUOTABLEOur identity as a defensive team has to be something we hold on tighter to, Snyder said. You can call that lack of focus. Its more subtle in some ways. For me its a lot of little things we werent doing. They add up.We have to know if were not focused and were not ready to play defense, we wont. Its not habitual yet. Its not who we are yet and its who we need to become who we are.UP NEXTSpurs: Host the Los Angeles Clippers and point guard Chris Paul, who entered Friday with a league-high 3.25 steals per game, on Saturday.Jazz: Travel to face a New York Knicks team on Sunday, that improved to 2/3 after a win over the Bulls on Friday. International Ice Hockey Federation President Rene Fasel said he had a good discussion Wednesday with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL Players Association Executive Director Don Fehr about the worlds top hockey players participating in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. No hitting, and no elbows, Fasel joked in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.Bettman described the meeting as constructive and candid.Still lots of issues, Bettman wrote in an email to the AP.Fasel said his job is to raise funds for the players transportation and insurance. The International Olympic Committee does not want to cover those costs as it has the previous five Olympics. Fasel hopes to persuade the IOC to financially support the NHLs participation. It is the only league that shuts down to participate in the Winter or Summer Olympics, Fasel said.Bettman and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly declined to comment on a Sportsnet report indicating the league has offered to sign off on allowing players to go for gold in South Korea in exchange for the union not opting out of the collective bargaining agreement in September 2019, which would in effect extend the deal for three years. There have been some suggestions that could be construed that that discussion would be worth having, Fehr told reporters in New York. Obviously, we discuss that with players. We have begun that process, but were a long way from done.Bettman has said a decision would need to be made by early January at the latest, giving the league time to create its 2017-18 schedule with or without a two-plus week break for the Olympics.Fasel isnt in a rush.We can wait longer because we want to do all we can to keep best-on-best hockey in the Olympics, Fasel said.NHL and NHLPA officials recently visited the Olympic site in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and have deemed it suitable for international competition.Whether the worlds best hockey players go to South Korea in about 15 months is up to the league and union, though Russian superstar Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has said he will go even if there isnt an agreement. The IOC spent about $14 million to cover travel and insurance costs for NHL players for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Fasel has said the bill would be about $10 million for the next Olympics because it wont be necessary to charter planes to South Korea as it was to get players to Sochi. The NHL hasnt sounded eager about going to South Korea, but does appear very interested in tapping into Chinas huge market in 2022.When the IOC awarded the Beijing Games, it certainly created a bigger opportunity than we thought existed potentially before, Daly said in September. But it is also possible that you dont go to one Olympics and you do go to the other. I dont think anybody has ruled that out as a possibility.Fasel has been trying to persuade national Olympic committees and hockey federations to donate funds to keep the games best players on the biggest stage in sports. PARIS -- Grands Tours organizers have decided to reduce the number of riders at their races in a move aimed at improving safety and increasing competition. The Tour de France, Giro dItalia and Spanish Vuelta organizers said in a joint statement Friday that the number of riders per team will decrease to eight, instead of the nine currently at their three-week races. The decision taken by ASO -- which organizes the Tour de France and Vuelta -- RCS Sport and one-day races organizers Flanders Classics will come into effect for the 2017 season. It will also see a reduction of riders at the other races they organize, with teams reduced to seven riders instead of eight.Following a meeting of the international association of cycling race organizers, they said they want to improve safety by reducing traffic on roads and make it more difficult for a team to dominate a race. The numbers of teams per raace will remain unchanged.ddddddddddddThe organizers believe that reducing the number of riders will help open up the races so that they are less controlled. Three-time Tour de France champion Chris Froomes Sky Team has been the dominant team in the peloton recently, locking down the race in the mountains and reducing suspense at cyclings biggest race. This decision responds to two-pronged objective: the first being to improve the safety conditions for the riders with a smaller peloton on roads equipped with more and more street furniture, the organizers said in their statement. The second, which is a fortunate consequence of the first, is to make it more difficult to dominate a race as well as enhance conditions for events to offer better racing for cycling fans. ' ' '
BOSTON -- It seems Andrew Benintendis knee injury looked worse than it actually is.Two days after twisting his left knee while falling into second base and needing to be helped from the field, Benintendi underwent a battery of tests that left the Boston Red Sox optimistic that the rookie left fielder will play again before the end of the regular season. When you think back and look at the video, this couldve been much, much worse, manager John Farrell said. Lucky that the ACL is not involved. Hell be back as soon as first available, and optimistically, were thinking that could still be the regular season. The tests -- another MRI exam, an X-ray and a CT scan, according to Farrell -- confirmed what the Red Sox already believed: that there isnt structural damage to the ligaments in Benintendis knee. The injury has been classified as a sprain, and Benintendi described himself as fortunate and pretty lucky that it isnt more severe. At the time I was nervous and didnt know what to expect, said Benintendi, who is wearing a brace but has been walking without the assistance of crutches. But after evaluating it and all that, I got pretty good news. Im pretty positive about how its coming so far.Benintendi has made a strong impression since the Red Sox called him up Aug. 1 -- 15 months after they drafted him in the first round out of the University of Arkansas. Hes batting .324 (22-for-68) with six doubles, one triple, one homer, 10 RBIs and an .850 OPS. He also made a highlight-reel catch Tuesday night to steal a home run from Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Steven Souza Jr.The Red Sox placed Benintendi on the disabled list Thursday, leaving him ineligible to play until Sept. 8. It will take at least that long, and probably a few weeks more, for him to be ready. He has been quickly embraced by this team. Thats obvious, Farrell said. His production has been apparent. On both sides of the baseball, he has made an impact. So were going to miss him. But today was some good news, despite what couldve been. Cheap Red Wings Jerseys . PARIS -- After a career of athletic success, Kim Gevaert regretted that her kids werent born when she was in her prime and didnt see the sprinter make history at the Beijing Olympics. A consolation was that the children were on hand eight years later, when their mothers history was finally put right.Gevaert and her teammates from Belgiums sprint relay squad in 2008 are among the first beneficiaries of what is quickly becoming the biggest rewriting of Olympic history. The story, for kids at least, is tricky to grasp, as Gevaert discovered when she tried explaining in September to her seven-, five- and three-year olds why a stern-looking man in a dark suit had just hung an Olympic gold medal around her neck, even though she retired years ago, in a packed Brussels stadium with an ecstatic crowd. But really, its simple: Dozens of medals that drug cheats won in Beijing, and again four years later in London, are finding their way to rightful owners, Gevaert included, thanks to an International Olympic Committee crackdown on dopers who escaped detection in 2008 and 2012 but are now being caught by advances in the science of drug testing.Taken out of storage and reanalyzed, urine samples from those games are now proving positive for anabolic steroids and other banned performance-enhancers that labs couldnt spot at the time. So far, the nearly 1,400 retests have caught 98 athletes. Disqualifications started as a drip, with the IOC first announcing in June 2015 that open-water swimmer Olga Beresnyeva of Ukraine was being stripped of her seventh place in London because retests found she used the banned blood-booster EPO.They have since swelled to a torrent. In the last four months, after reanalyzing their samples, the IOC has ordered 17 medal winners from Beijing -- which has now lost more medalists to doping than any other games -- and nine from London to hand back their golds, silvers and bronzes. More are expected to follow as the retesting continues and expands to samples from the 2014 Sochi Games, the IOCs medical director, Richard Budgett, told The Associated Press in a phone interview. Its both a wonderful story but a very sad story at the same time, Budgett said. Because those athletes who should have got medals have had to wait an incredibly long time.At least, in the end, justice has been done, he added. It will be good for the deterrence of future cheaters. Those caught include Yulia Chermoshanskaya, the anchor runner for Russia in womens sprint relay in Beijing. She and her teammates were stripped of gold after two anabolic steroids, stanozolol and turinabol, were found in Chermoshanskayas urine reanalyzed this year. Tests can now detect if athletes used the drugs weeks before competing. Previously, the detection window was mere days. That bumped the silver medalists -- Gevaert, Olivia Borlee, Hanna Marien and Elodie Ouedraogo -- to first place. The first Belgian women ever to medal on an Olympic track will never know how they would have felt had they, not the Russians, stood on top of the podium in Beijing and heard their anthem play. But they got, albeit belatedly, the next best thing: a rousing ceremony and standing ovation at a track meet in Brussels King Baudouin Stadium on Sept. 9. Gevaerts kids were in the 40,000-strong crowd and saw her and her teammates, all wearing golden tops, be driven around in an open-top vintage car and former IOC President Jacques Rogge hang the medals around their necks. They were able to be part of a very special moment in my career, Gevaert, who retired shortly after Beijing, said. The stadium was full, the crowd was very enthusiastic, she added. They made it a fabulous occasion. Even after eight years, it was a magical moment. The reallocation of medals isnt automatic. To make sure that theyre not handing medals from one dopper to another, the IOC is also retesting the samples of athletes who are next in line.dddddddddddd. Dina Sazanovets, for example, placed fourth in her 69-kilogram weightlifting category in London but wont get the bronze stripped from her Belarusian teammate Marina Shkermankova, because retests found steroids in both of their samples. The Belgian sprinters samples, on the other hand, were negative when retested, Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant, head of the Belgium Olympic Committee, said in a phone interview.Even if retests find nothing, the IOC is not obliged to reward those further down, if it feels they are too compromised to deserve a medal. The womens 1,500 meters in London looks particularly problematic. As fourth-place finisher, Tatyana Tomashova would theoretically be in line for bronze, after race winner Asli Cakir Alptekin forfeited gold for doping. But the Russian served a doping ban of two years and nine months before competing in London. For the moment, the IOC has not reallocated the medals and still lists Tomashova as fourth.American Shannon Rowbury, who placed sixth, wonders whether she might end up among the medals and struggles to reply when people ask where she finished. Its a really helpless feeling to just be sitting and waiting and, you know, hoping that justice will be served, Rowbury said. With London in particular, there are just so many question marks and so many `What ifs?Once the IOC determines who gets what, it has guidelines but no firm rules governing exactly how athletes should be awarded their reassigned medals. It leaves the choice of ceremony up to national Olympic committees, recommending that they invite dignitaries and the media and play the Olympic anthem. When Australian race walker Jared Tallent received his London gold, stripped from a Russian drug cheat, nearly four years late this June, he was given a choice of venues. He opted for Melbourne, because he grew up nearby, and the citys Old Treasury Building, because its a really nice place and I could have all my family and friends there. It was all televised on TV, a pretty special occasion. He first returned the silver. It was a weird feeling, giving that medal back. That was about a month before my medal ceremony, so I didnt have an Olympic medal for a month until I got a gold replacement, he said in a phone interview.Irish walker Robert Heffernan, who got bumped up from fourth place in that race, received his bronze on Thursday in his hometown of Cork, regaled with a piper, plenty of pomp and a jubilant crowd that filled City Hall with cheers as the medal was finally hung around his neck. Heffernan delayed the ceremony until after competing at the Rio Games this August because he wanted to fully enjoy the occasion with family and friends after his four-year wait. Its been a very long, drawn-out affair, his manager, Derry McVeigh, said in a phone interview. If youre just focusing on this medal all the time, it can just take over your life.Beckers-Vieujant, the Belgium Olympic chief, traveled himself to Switzerland to pick up the golds for Gevaert and her teammates and drove them back, in a very nice lacquered wooden box, by car to Brussels. Not the original medals that the Russians got, these were drawn instead from an IOC stock of replacements. The IOC luckily still had a few gold medals left from Beijing, he said.He rushed them to an engraver, to mark that they were won for sprint relay, before the handover in the cheering stadium. It was a marvelous moment, he said. Unforgettable. The sense of justice restored gave it additional warmth.---AP Sports Writers Stephen Wilson in London and James Ellingworth in Moscow contributed to this report. ' ' '
Australian cycling star Richie Porte has gone to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone, ending his Rio Olympics. The Australian team had ridden perfectly in the mens road race on Saturday before Porte crashed on a steep descent with less than 40km left in the pulsating 237.5km race.Portes BMC teammate, Belgian Greg van Avermaet, outsprinted Dane Jakob Fuglsang at Fort Copacabana to win the gold medal, with Pole Rafal Majka finishing five seconds behind for the bronze.Simon Clarke was the only Australian finisher in 25th place, six minutes 12 seconds behind the two leaders.Porte was a medal contender in the road race and also was a strong chance in Wednesdays road time trial.Teammate Rohan Dennis will be Australias only entrant in the time trial and he is also a medal favourite.Richie actually made the joke as he was lying there in the gutter, in quite a lot of pain, Macca, I dont think Im in for the time trial, said Australian mens road coach Brad McGee.It looks like the collarbone is done, maybe something around his ribs.He didnt lose consciousness and hes in good spirits, but obviously in a lot of pain.Theres definitely a few breaks in there somewhere. It was unclear whether Porte would need surgery. The crash and injury continues his rotten luck. While he finished a breakthrough fifth in last months Tour de France, he would have been runner-up had he not suffered an ill-timed puncture on stage two.Porte also crashed on the chaotic Mt Ventoux stage. You want to put a medal around his neck and unfortunately its eventuated the way it is, McGee said of Porte. While unwilling to predict how Porte might have done, McGee admitted the Australian teamwork had helped put him in an ideal scenario.Porte had to stop twice earlier in the race to fix his chain, but otherwise was riding well.He was definitely right where we wanted him, McGee said. The boys, limited as we were in firepower, they did exactly what was needed. He was there, ready to shine, so where would he have ended up? We dont know. Its definitely disappointing, but were not broken ... hell be back.McGee added Dennis was showing strong form ahead of the time trial, his main objective for Rio.We know Rohan off the bike, hes a bit of a scallywag at times, McGee said. But on the bike, in the job, hes just on fire.He was definitely in the zone today and we look forward to that on Wednesday.Dennis and mountain biker Scott Bowden pulled out of the race early, as planned, to save themselves for their main Olympic events. STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Auburns Kamryn Pettway has big, broad shoulders and a knack for finding room to run.So when the 6-foot, 240-pound sophomore had some early success against Mississippi State, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn made sure he got the ball again and again and again. The end result was a career day for Pettway and an easy 38-14 victory for the Tigers over Mississippi State on Saturday. Pettway finished with career highs in rushing yards (169), touchdowns (3) and carries (39).Auburn quarterback Sean White threw for 204 yards and a touchdown, but the most effective thing he did all day was simply turn and had the ball to Pettway, who ran over, around and through an overmatched Mississippi State defense.Hes a beast of a running back, White said. Hes just a tough runner. Hell get the tough yards. It might not always be pretty, but hes a really good asset for us to have.Pettway thrived despite the heavy workload, running for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as Auburn built a 35-0 lead. His role increased after starting running back Kerryon Johnson suffered a right ankle injury in the first quarter and didnt return. Malzahn said he hoped Johnsons injury wasnt serious.Auburn (4-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) has won three straight and now gets two weeks to rest before facing Arkansas on Oct. 22.We really like the momentum we have, Malzahn said. Weve talked about getting better each week and weve done that. Were in a good spot.Mississippi State (2-3, 1-2) actually had a little momentum in the games opening minutes when Kivon Coman intercepted a deflected pass to give the Bulldogs great field position at the Auburn 19. But five plays later, Westin Graves missed a 28-yard field goal.It only got worse for Mississippi State.Auburn scored touchdowns on five of its next seven drives to take control of the game. By late in the second quarter, boos could be heard from the home crowd as Mississippi States struggling offense took the field.Mississippi States Nick Fitzgerald threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns, but almost all that damage came in the second half when Auburn already had control of the game.I wish there was one thing I could point my finger to and say that was it, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. But theres not. It was a lot of things.Fitzgerald also led Mississippi State with 61 yards rushing. Mississippi State faces a quick turnaround -- the Bulldogs have to play at BYU on Friday.Losing is never fun and that kind of loss is pretty depressing I guess, Fitzgerald said. But have your pity party now and tomorrow get back to work.THE TAKEAWAYAuburn: The Tigers showed they might be a factor in the SEC Western Division race after an impressive win. Even after Johnsons injury early in the game, Pettway was able to anchor the running game. White might not be flashy at quarterback, but hes consistent and makes good decisions.Mississippi State: The Bulldogs streak of making the postseason in six straight seasons appears to be in serious jeopardy. The offense doesnt have many playmakers and the defense was overwhelmed by Auburns power running game.POLL IMPLICATIONSAuburn: The Tigers received 46 votes in last weeks rankings and could jump into the top 25 after an impressive road SEC win.UP NEXTAuburn: The Tigers get a week off to rest before a home game against Arkansas on Oct. 22.Mississippi State: The Bulldogs travel to face BYU in a non-conference game on Friday.-----Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP . SHANGHAI -- The Asia swing is the rare trip where Patrick Reeds wife doesnt accompany him. She stayed in Houston because theyre finally moving into their new house at The Woodlands. Not that Reed figures to spend that much time in his new digs.American golfers are traveling more than ever, and the 26-year-old Reed is taking that to an extreme. He has played 66 tournaments in the last 24 months (including the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup), and as a long and tiring 2016 starts to wind down, Reed is just getting warmed up.He played in Malaysia last week and is at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai this week. Next week is the Turkish Airlines Open, and then after a week at home, he heads to Dubai for the final event of the European Tour season. After a week back home for Thanksgiving, Reed is off to the Bahamas for the Hero World Challenge and then gets on another plane for the Hong Kong Open. And then 20 days before we head to Hawaii, he said, with a grin. The reason for this hectic schedule?I love to compete. I love to play, Reed said on the practice range at Sheshan International, just three hours after his plane landed from Malaysia. When Im home, Im just sitting there wishing I was out playing. Justine feels the same way. It might not be the best strategic way to get your ranking up, but at the end of the day, if you play well it doesnt matter.Reeds ranking really isnt hurt that much by playing because there is a maximum of 52 tournaments that count toward the equation. He is No. 7 in the world, making progress toward that top 5 player in the world comment that attracted so much attention when he won the World Golf Championship at Doral two years ago.Besides, he says he always wanted to be known as a global player. He is going to Antalya next week, conceding that he didnt know where it was (Turkey) while in college in Georgia. He couldnt find Dubai on the map until he went for the first time last year to finish his first year as a European Tour member.I didnt want to play only in the U.S., Reed said. I feel it helps my game traveling overseas. I always wanted to see the world and get out of my comfort zone. Most top players limit themselves to about 22 tournaments a year, feeling as though they need time off to rest their body and mind. So far, Reed said keeping fresh has been the least of his worries.Im stubborn. My mind is great, he said. If anything, the one thing Ill work on is the body. The body can go in dips, and it breaks down my swing. This was his busiest year yet, partly because of the Olympics. Starting with the U.S. Open, Reed played 14 times in 16 weeks through the Ryder Cup. The only tournament he didnt play was the Canadian Open. The other week was an open week before the Tour Championship.Im tired this year, he conceded. But Im still going to do it. I just have to get down when I have long runs and when I need my breaks. The Jose Mourinho era at Manchester United hit its first bump in the road, now the challenge will be to bounce back against a plucky Watford side at Vicarage Road on Sunday.Since the Portuguese manager was sacked by Chelsea back in December, it almost seemed inevitable The Special One would wind up at Old Trafford. Following a summer in which the club spent north of £119 million for defender Eric Bailly and midfielder Paul Pogba, an undisclosed fee for Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan and landed Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer, expectations in the red half of Manchester are sky high. And Mourinhos retooled side looked the part after three consecutive victories, but last weeks 2-1 setback in the Manchester Derby represented the first setback.Pep Guardiolas Manchester City opened a 2-0 lead on the back of goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho. Ibrahimovic pulled the Red Devils (2-0-1) within one, but the equaliser proved elusive as City threw the first gauntlet down in the early title race.Old Trafford also seemed a logical landing spot for Ibrahimovic given his previous work with Mourinho at Inter Milan. The former Sweden international explained why he believes the two work well together.I know what he wants, I know his demands, Ibrahimovic said. Hes a winner and I see myself as a winner also. I do anything to win. And we won. He won when he was younger and I won when I was younger and we will win when we are a little bit older. Not old, but a little bit older! He is direct with everyone. He is not someone who goes behind your back. I prefer that instead of someone who doesnt say anything to you. He does what he needs to do to win.On the injury front for United, defender Phil Jones picked up a knee ligament injury and could miss a month of action. Mourinho left several of his first-choice players in Manchester as the club faced Feyenoord in Europa League action on Thursday. Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingaard, Mkhitaryan and Wayne Rooney were all left home as the Red Devils suffered a 1-0 loss in that Europa opener. He has played every game since the start of the season, the manager said of his decision to omit Rooney from the squad. He has also played 90 minutes for the England team. He played 90 minutes last weekend and I want him to be fresh for the next Premier League match. While Watford (1-1-2) do not have any European football to worry about, theyll aim for a second consecutive win following an impressive 4-2 comeback victory over West Ham United last weekend.West Ham raced out to a two-goal margin thanks to a pair of goals from Michail Antonio, but the Hornets responded with four answered tallies to stun the home crowd at Olympic Stadium. Manager Walter Mazzarri applauded his clubs resolve, despite falling into an early deficit. We didnt start very well, we were in the sky as you say in Italy. But when we started to concentrate the result came, said Mazzarri. West Ham had the whole stadium with them. They came to us in a positive way but we started playing our football and the result came our way.I was a bit worried (down 2-0) but even at that score we had chances. We spoke with the players and adjusted a few things, which allowed us to have more possession and attack more.Man U did the double over Watford last season, including a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road in November. Still, it wasnt all bad news for Castroneves or Penske -- which claimed its third pole in seven Iowa races. Penske teammate Will Power will start first, and Castroneves still earned nine championship points by winning the top heat. Castroneves also extended his lead over defending champion Ryan Hunter-Reay to 25 points in the process. James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont., will start second, followed by Marco Andretti, Scott Dixon and Ed Carpenter. "These points, its always good. Its always crucial when you are fighting for the championship, and every point counts," Castroneves said. This was the second straight year that the IndyCar series seeded the Iowa field with heat races. After receiving mixed feedback from drivers and fans, officials tweaked the formula this year. The runs were extended from 30 to 50 laps, and the heats were set by a single-lap qualifying run rather than practice times. The first race didnt produce a ton of excitement as Dixon and Takuma Sato advanced with relative ease. Castroneves cruised, as well, leading all 50 laps of his heat before being forced to go to a new engine. "The good news is my car, as you could see, is really fast. Anything could happen," Castroneves said. The second heat provided some much-needed drama. Graham Rahal and Simon Pagenaud battled furiously for second and final berth in the last heat, and Rahal passed Pagenaud and then Ed Carpenter to take first. The strong qualifying run was crucial for Power, who remains in 11th place after finishing second each of the past three seasons. "I really need to gain some points on those guys, Helio, Hunter Reay, everyone in front of me," Power said. "Theres a lot of people in front. But at some point the championship is going to become out of reach." The biggest concern about heat races was potential wrecks. Those fears were realized when James Jakes lost control and hit the wall two laps from the end of the second heat. Jakes was checked in the medical centre, released and cleared to drive Sunday, though he will start near the back. Hunter-Reay, who won last week at Milwaukee and last year at Iowa, was just 14th after qualifying. "You know, it was way off the mark. Weve been sitting on our own thumbs all day. We just missed it," Hunter-Reay said. "Were starting buried in the pack. We gave up points." Alex Tagliani of Lachenaie, Que., will start 12th. KENT, Ohio -- Third-string quarterback, and fifth-year senior, Oluwafemi Bamiro threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Keyes in the fourth overtime and North Carolina A&T beat Kent State 39-36 on Saturday night. The opening kickoff was delayed more than two hours due to bad weather.Tarik Cohen ran for 133 yards and a score and added 125 yards receiving, while Jeremy Taylor -- who had 22 tackles last season -- had 15 stops, including two sacks, and an interception for North Carolina A&T (2-0).It was 17-all at the end of regulation and tied at 36 after the third overtime. Shane Hynes 42-yard field goal gave Kent State (0-2) a 36-33 lead in the fourth OT. Onn third-and-15, Bamiros pass to Elijah Bell down the left sideline fell incomplete but a pass interference call gave the Aggies a fresh set downs and two plays later Keyes scored the walk-off touchdown.ddddddddddddA&T backup quarterback Kylil Carter, who came in after starter Lamar Raynard threw two first-half interceptions, left late in regulation with an injury. EVANSTON, Ill. -- Indiana and Northwestern have the look of two Big Ten teams passing in midseason.Quarterback Clayton Thorson threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday, and the resurgent Wildcats bolted to an early lead then coasted past the Hoosiers 24-14 for their third straight victory. In a reversal of its 1/3 start to the season, Northwestern (4-3, 3-1) took a 24-3 lead and wasnt seriously threatened the rest of the way.Without a doubt, (the difference) is the way weve prepared, Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald said in a hoarse voice that confirmed his more vocal leadership of late. We really had to change gears with the way we practiced and worked out, a spring-ball type mentality.Meanwhile, Indiana (3-4, 1-3) dropped its third consecutive game after three victories in the first four starts. To get out of this deal, weve got to batten down the hatches, circle the wagons and get better, coach Kevin Wilson said. Five games left. We need to notch some victories.Thorson became the first Northwestern signal-caller since at least 2000 to throw three or more touchdown passes in three consecutive games. He completed 24 passes in 43 attempts and did not throw an interception.Running back Justin Jackson led the Northwestern ground attack with 106 yards in 28 carries.Everything worked for us in the first half, said Thorson, who left the game briefly because of an unspecified upper-body injury midway through the final period. We ran for a bunch of yards. We passed for a bunch of yards. We were really balanced. The Wildcats took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards for a touchdown, as the Hoosiers had no answer for their no-huddle offense. Thorson connected with Solomon Vault on a 17-yard pass to complete the 11-play drive. After Indiana was unable to move the ball on its next possession, Northwestern needed only five plays to score again.Thorson completed three straight passes for first downs, the last to Austin Carr for a 34-yard touchdown. It marked the sixth straight game in which Carr scored on a pass reception.Griffin Oakes cut the deficit to 14-3 on a 21-yard field five minutes later, but the Wildcats responded immediately. On the first play of the second period, Thorson hooked up with Macan Wilson on a 32-yard strike to climax a nine-play, 79-yard drive. We were a little flat-footed early . but they got a handle on it, got a good bead on it, said Wilson, whose team didnt allow a point in the second half. Thats a credit to not just the coaches but the kids. Because they settled down, and they needed to.Nick Westbrook scored Indianas lone touchdown on a 3-yard run late in the third period.Forced to throw often in the second half, Hoosiers quarterback Richard Lagow completed 35 of 59 attempts for 319 yards. He was intercepted twice.Westbrook paced the receivers with 10 receptions for 126 yards.TAKEAWAYIndiana: While the defense continues to hold its own, there has been little evidence of the high-powered attack that Wilson was expected to bring with him from Oklahoma five years ago. The offense scored just five touchdowns and 51 points in the last three games. Same story -- cant run it and cant score points. So, poorly-coached, Wilson said.... Fitzgerald and White served as Northwestern assistants under since-deceased coach Randy Walker in the 2001 season. NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez will be suspended today, likely through the 2014 season, as part of Major League Baseballs latest drug investigation but can play while he appeals, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Major League Baseball informed the New York Yankees on Sunday that A-Rod will be suspended for his links to a clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statement was authorized. The Yankees werent told the exact length of the suspension, though they were under the impression it will be through the 2014 season, the person said. The Yankees star could get a shorter penalty if he agrees to give up the right to file a grievance and force the case before an arbitrator, the person added. A suspension from Monday through 2014 would add to 214 games, and an unsuccessful appeal could stretch serving the penalty into 2015. In the era before players and owners agreed to a drug plan in late 2002, arbitrators often shortened drug suspensions -- in the case of Yankees pitcher Steve Howe, his penalty was cut from a lifetime ban to 119 days. MLB planned an announcement for noon EDT Monday, a second person familiar with the deliberations said, also on condition of anonymity. Rodriguez is the most famous player linked to the now-closed Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic in Florida, and the Yankees expect him to be charged with interfering with MLBs investigation, resulting in a harsher penalty than the other 13 players facing discipline. Barring an agreement, Rodriguezs appeal would be heard by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. Adding to the drama: The 38-year-old Rodriguez, a three-time AL MVP, was due to return to the major leagues Monday night when the Yankees play at Chicago White Sox, his first big league appearance since hip surgery in January. "Hes in there, and Im going to play him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sunday after New Yorks 6-3 loss at San Diego. Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson was excited A-Rod could play during an appeal. "I want him back with us. This is arguably one of the best hitters of all-time," he said. "Having him in the lineup is obviously going to be very positive for us." New York is a season-high 9 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East and 4 1/2 out in the race for the second wild-card spot. "Were going to be happy to see him back in the lineup, especially the way weve been playing," second baseman Robinson Cano said. "He can come up and help us win some games." All-Stars Nelson Cruz of Texas, Jhonny Peralta of Detroit and Everth Cabrera of San Diego were among those who could get 50-game suspensions from the probe, sparked in January when Miami New Times published documents linking many players to the closed clinic in Coral Gables, Fla. Many players were expected to agree to penalties and start serving them immediately, but an appeal by a first-offender under the drug agreement would postpone his suspension until after a decision by an arbitrator. Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun, the 2011 NL MVP, agreed July 22 to a 65-game ban through the rest of the 2013 season for his role with Biogenesis. Braun was given a 50-game suspension for elevated testosterone that was overturned last year by arbitrator Shyam Das because of issues with the handing of the urine sample, Since spring training, the union has said it will consider stiffer penalties starting in 2014. "The home runs that are hit because a guys on performance-enhancing substances, those ruin somebodys ERA, which ruins their arbitration case, which ruins their salary," Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson said. "So its a whole domino effect." Rodriguezs return from hip surgery was slowed by a quadriceps injury. He completed his second minor league injury rehabilitation assignment on Saturday night, a two-day stay at Double-A Trenton. Rodriguez walked in all four plate appearances, a day after hitting a two-run homer. Following Friday nights game, Rodriguez all but said he thought MLB and the Yankees were conspiring to keep him from getting back to the big leagues. "There is more than one party that benefits from me not ever stepping back on the field. And thats not my teammates and its not the Yankee fans," said, adding: "When all this stuff is going on in the background and people are finding creative ways to cancel your contract and stuff like that, I think thats concerning for me." He last played in October, going 3 for 25 (.120) with no RBIs in the playoffs. Rodriguez is owed $8,568,306 of his $28 million salary from Monday through the rest of the season and $86 million for the final four years of his contract with the Yankees. Girardi didnt think A-Rods arrival would create more turmoil than the Yankees already are used to. "I dont suspect itll be awkward. Most of these guys know him as a teammate and have laughed a lot with Alex and been around Alex a lot," he said. "I think itll be business as usual. Im sure there will be more media there, obviously, tomorrow, but I think thats probably more for Alex to deal with than the rest of the guys. I dont think itll be a big deal." Lawyers involved in the drug cases have been trying to reach agreements that would avoid grievances. Deal or no deal, baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was prepared to announce discipline. Peralta didnt think the possibility of a suspension made it harder to focus on the field. "Nothing to worry about," he said. "Play the game how I play every day, and try to enjoy every day." Asked what action he would take if penalized, Cruz said: "I havent decided what Im going to do." There have been 43 suspensions under the major league drug agreement since testing with penalties for first offences started in 2005. The longest penalty served has been a 100-game suspension by San Francisco pitcher Guillermo Mota for a positive test for Clenbuterol, his second drug offence. In addition, Tampa Bay outfielder Manny Ramirez retired two years ago rather than face a 100-game suspension. When he decided to return for 2012 the penalty was cut to 50 games because he already had sat out almost an entire season. Colorado catcher Eliezer Alfonzo was suspended for 100 games in September 2011, but the penalty was rescinded the following May because of handling issues similar to the ones involving Brauns urine sample. Those on the under had to love the ugly first half that Temple led 13-3, but the second half was a different story.Memphis outscored the Owls 17-0 in the third quarter to take a 20-13 lead. That score held until less than nine minutes left in the game. Bettors on the under had a nice 24.5-point cushion, but then touchdowns started coming left and right. Within a 4 minute and 25 second span, each team scored two touchdowns -- and just like that, it was over for those on the under.Final score:?Memphis 34, Temple 27 (Game goes over)SaturdayBowling Green Falcons at Ohio BobcatsClosing line:?Ohio -12An overwhelming 81 percent of the action was on Ohio to cover against Bowling Green. The Trojans dominated for stretches in the game, out-gaining the Buffaloes by 168 yards. But four USC turnovers -- including three fumbles in Colorado territory -- kept the margin close.Trailing 21-14 with less than five minutes left, Colorado elected to kick a field goal instead of going for it on fourth-and-nine from the USC 24-yard line, cutting the deficit to four. The outcome of the game and the spread would come down to one play on USCs next possession. On third-and-7 from the Collorado 39-yard line, Sam Darnold hooked up with JuJu Smith-Schuster in what looked like a walk-in touchdown -- but, unfortunately for the 48 percent of bettors on USC, Smith-Schuster purposely went down instead of scoring the touchdown, and the Trojans ran out the clock.ddddddddddddFinal score:?USC 21, Colorado 17 (Colorado covers)Washington State Cougars at Stanford CardinalClosing over/under:?56.5This was yet another Pac-12 After Dark game that kept bettors up late into the night. The actual game was far from competitive, as Washington State led from start to finish, improving to 9-1 against the spread, including its sixth outright win as an underdog since the start of last season. The Cougars led 14-3 at halftime, as the 25 percent who took the under just needed to avoid a 40-point second half. While Stanfords offense couldnt get going, Washington State continued to move up and down the field and led 42-10 late.On the final drive of the game, the Cardinal finally showed some life offensively and drove down to the Cougars one-yard line. In what was the final play of the game, Stanford scored its only offensive touchdown when Ryan Burns connected with JJ Arcega-Whiteside, crushing those who took the under.Final score:?Washington State 42, Stanford 16 (Game goes over)SundayGeorgia Bulldogs at South Carolina GamecocksClosing over/under:?41.5The 54 percent of bettors who took the under in this rare Sunday college football game probably wish they had used that money on some NFL action. The teams combined for 21 points in the first three quarters, as Georgia led 14-7 entering the fourth. Just a few minutes into the final quarter, the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 21-7 after an Isaiah McKenzie touchdown catch from Jacob Eason. That score held until less than two minutes left, when South Carolinas Rico Dowdle punched it in from one yard out to make the score 21-14.At this point, all those on the under needed was for Georgia to recover the onside kick and run out the clock. While the Bulldogs recovered it, Terry Godwin did more than that, as he returned it 43 yards for a touchdown. Rodrigo Blakenships PAT pushed the total over by half a point.Final score:?Georgia 28, South Carolina 14 (Game goes over) ' ' '
Working the waiver wire is crucial to succeeding in fantasy basketball. With so many games, injuries and endless shifts in rotations throughout the season, we need to source stats from free agency in order to maximize our imaginary rosters. In this weekly series we identify players available as free agents in at least half of ESPN leagues at each position. Some nominations are purely specialists capable of helping in one or two categories, while others deliver more diverse and important statistical offerings. Either way, we believe the names below -- ordered by ownership rate at each position -- can contribute positively to fantasy rosters.Point guardJrue Holiday, New Orleans Pelicans (Owned in 34.6 percent of ESPN leagues): ESPNs Zach Lowe shared some revealing intel on his The Lowe Post podcast, noting the Pelicans could get Holiday back in the mix by mid-November. Even if this estimate proves optimistic, we should see Holiday return within the month, making him a worthy stash in deeper formats given his ability to immediately become a top-12 fantasy point guard. Last season, Holiday tied for seventh among point guards in usage rate with Kyrie Irving.Matthew Dellavedova, Milwaukee Bucks (32.4): A career-high clip of 28.3 minutes helps support a strong steal rate and positive contributions as a passer and shooter. As a bonus, you can also lead your league in grit, determination, and annoying other NBA players.J.J. Barea, Dallas Mavericks (21.9): Sixth in the NBA in drives per game, just ahead of guys like John Wall and Dennis Schroder. Barea has at least four assists in each game and is hitting a robust 2.4 3-pointers per game, further evidence hes truly underappreciated as a fantasy option.Shooting guardKyle Korver, Atlanta Hawks (29.8): A down shooting season for Korver is relative, as he shot only 39.9 percent from beyond the arc last year. Hes back up to 43.3 percent this season from 3-point range.Sean Kilpatrick (23.1) and Bojan Bogdanovic (20.9), Brooklyn Nets: We endorsed Kilpatrick last week and with the market still asleep on the watch, he merits additional hype given hes produced at least 13 points in every game this season and helps in points, 3-pointers and steals. Fellow Brooklyn scorer Bogdanovic can be considered more of a specialist in the shooting department, as hes hitting two 3-pointers per game and should see steady opportunities on a Nets team that rates sixth in the league in pace.Danny Green, San Antonio Spurs (16.3): Even with deflated offensive output last season, we still netted a steal and nearly a block per game from Green. One of the truly special block producers from the backcourt, Green is set to return soon and should be speculatively added in deeper formats.Malcolm Brogdon, Milwaukee Bucks (3.8): You might not know much about Brogdon, but hes played at least 24 minutes and has four assists in each of his past three games. The combo guard also has seven total steals over this span and should see steady exposure as the team is without Khris Middleton for the season.Small forwardMichael Kidd-Gilchrist, Charlotte Hornets (47.5): MKG rates ninth in the league in rebounding chances per game -- defined as being within 3.5 feet of an available rebound. Such a rich clip of opportunities supports a high fantasy floor for the versatile forward, while we also appreciate the rare help he can provide in steals and blocks. Simply put, Kidd-Gilchrist is among the most underappreciated fantasy options in ESPN leagues.Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics (13.0): Eligible at both small and power forward, dont let Browns sluggish seasonal rates throw off the trail, as we identify a surging role for this rookie. Brown played 35 minutes this past Thursday after playing just 23 in the previous two games. With impressive 3-point efficiency and a steal per game, Brown is on the rise as a needed scoring complement to Al Horford in the teams frontcourt.Wilson Chandler, Denver Nuggets (11.1): Elite in leagues that reward neck tattoos, Chandler is also helpful in standard fantasy formats thanks to steady minutes (30.2) and a secure role as a scoring wing (14.4 points per game) for the Nuggets.Power forwardTaj Gibson, Chicago Bulls (41.8): A career clip of 1.3 blocks signals Gibson can help in this scarce stat now that hes seeing over 26 minutes per game. It also helps to consider Gibson ranks in the top 25 in rebounding opportunities and also offers some upside in the steals department.Ersan?Ilyasova, Philadelphia 76ers (6.0): With Brett Browns system pushing the ball and in need of spacing, the newly acquired stretch forward has averaged 25.5 minutes and 12.5 shots in two games with Philly.Terrence Jones, New Orleans Pelicans (5.6): Finally deployed as a starter this past Friday, Jones thrived in 28 minutes of exposure. A key 3-and-D asset for a team in need of complementary production for Anthony Davis, Jones could be a truly rewarding addition for those in need of upside at the four.CenterAndrew Bogut, Dallas Mavericks (41.9): Just ahead of Paul Millsap and Karl-Anthony Towns in rebounding chances per game, Bogut can also help with blocks and assists as a complementary commodity at a shallow center position.Tyson Chandler, Phoenix Suns (36.0): Third in the league in rebounding opportunities with a rich 22.7 chances per game on the glass so far, its fitting to find Chandler third in the NBA in rebounds per game. While the 16-year vet doesnt block many shots or score much at this advanced stage of his career, we can expect elite rebounding and shooting efficiency (63 percent from the field) from the big man.Clint Capela, Houston Rockets (33.9): A favorite sleeper of mine heading into the season, were starting to see Capelas steal rate rise, although consistent foul trouble has limited his minutes so far this season. As the key rim protector for the Rockets, expect an uptick in blocks for a line that mimics a lesser approximation of what we can net from Phillys Nerlens Noel. Cheap Wild Jerseys Authentic . ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis right-hander Carlos Martinez takes pride in his hitting. It showed on Monday in a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.Martinez had two hits and extended his hitting streak to four games with singles in the third and fifth innings.I want to let my teammates know that I can put the ball in play too, Martinez said, That they can rely on me to get a hit.Martinez went 2 for 2 to push his average to .290 -- better than five of the eight position players in the lineup on Monday. Its nice to have a guy up there swing it well, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. The Golden State Warriors are asking for $15 million to $20 million per year for the rights for a company to put its logo on their jersey starting in the 2017-18 season, sources told ESPN.It is believed that the Warriors, who won the NBA title in 2015 but lost in the Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games this year, are asking for more money than any other team. The NBA recently approved a three-year pilot program to allow teams to sell 2?-inch by 2?-inch patches on the upper left of jerseys, opposite what will be a swoosh from Nike, which will begin its deal as the leagues official apparel-maker after the 2016-17 season.Only one club has consummated a deal since the league allowed teams to start doing business in mid-May. The Philadelphia 76ers three-year deal with StubHub is worth $5 million a year, according to sources. The Warriors are making a case to companies that star power -- which now includes Kevin Durant -- combined with their huge market and local television ratings make the high cost of doing business worth it.What companies will ultimately pay is said to be based on how much is included in the package beyond the logo on the jersey, such as whether they get sponsor category exclusivity, arena signage inventory and breadth of use to a teams logos for marketing.Category competitiveness will also play a part, as a company in the tech sector with hundreds of competitors would likely pay more than a soft drink company, which features a main battle of Coca-Cola versus Pepsi.Officials with the Warriors declined comment.Eric Smallwood of Apex Marketing Group, a sponsorship evaluation company that has been hired by some teams to help maximize their logo patch deals, said the greatest value is based on how many natioonal television broadcasts a team will have, which is largely based on how good the team is.ddddddddddddSmallwood said the concern from sponsors would be if a three-year deal is signed and key players leave.Sponsors have to have a player contingency put in these deals, Smallwood said.In the 2013-14 season, for example, Miami had 25 national television games and Cleveland had four. LeBron James then went back to Cleveland, and the next season, the Cavaliers were featured in 21 games while Miami had 16.Smallwood said that -- based on his calculations of total exposure that includes TV broadcasts, social media and internet exposure -- the Warriors would have a patch worth $12.9 million to $19.3 million if they had at least 30 national TV games. That doesnt include playoffs, Smallwood said.A three-year Warriors deal could present some challenges. Stephen Curry?and Durant could be gone by the time the patch deal would start in 2017-18. A patch deal could also tie in to a new arena for the 2018-19 season, which isnt on a definite timetable yet. While many elements are included in a patch deal, teams have to declare what the value of just the patch itself is. Thats because the value of the deal must be divided into two -- 50 percent to the teams and 50 percent to the players. Of the 50 percent that the teams keep, half of that goes to the team that did the deal with the other half going to a revenue-sharing pool. The corporate logos will not be on jerseys at retail nationwide. Teams can elect to sell the jersey with the corporate logo in their team stores. The 76ers said they would offer that option to fans. ' ' '
Former St. Louis Blues captain David Backes said he got goosebumps thinking about joining a team that already includes centers Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. These guys get it, the free-agent forward said Friday after signing with the Boston Bruins in the first 30 minutes of NHL free agency. They know what its going to take to win. Thats what sold me on it. ... If you have prominent players that are putting team first, the rest of the guys really have no choice.A two-time U.S. Olympian, Backes agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with the Bruins and said he hoped to help the Original Six club return to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Listing off some of the players already on the roster, Backes said it was more of a retooling than a rebuilding. Some guys would have looked at it like, Youve already got Bergeron and Krejci, where will I play? David said, Boy, I get to play with Bergeron and Krejci, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said. These guys are going to be the leading core to get us where we want to go. The younger guys are going to have to get on board.Backes, 32, is the first major addition this offseason for a team that won the 2011 Stanley Cup and returned to the finals two years later. The team re-signed defenseman Torey Krug and bought out the contract of defenseman Dennis Seidenberg on Thursday. Free agents Loui Eriksson and Lee Stempniak agreed to deals with the Canucks and Carolina, respectively. Also signing with Boston on the first day of free agency were defensemen Tommy Cross and John-Michael Liles, goalie Anton Khudobin, and forwards Riley Nash, Tyler Randell and Tim Schaller.Theyre trying to get pieces back that will get them over the hump, Backes said. They barely missed the playoffs last year, and if they had [made it] I dont think anyone would have wanted to play them.Backes had 21 goals and 24 assists last season for the Blues. In a 10-year NHL career -- all with St. Louis -- he has 206 goals and 254 assists in 727 regular-season games.Backes, whos from Minneapolis, said it was difficult for his family to leave St. Louis, the team that selected him in the second round of the 2003 draft. It was tough in that its all Ive known, he said in a conference call with reporters. It happens a lot in this business, it hasnt happened to us. But change is good.Backes bid farewell to St. Louis in a lengthy Twitter post:Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said talks with his captain broke down over the length of the deal.I had no problem bringing David Backes back, and I wish we could have, he said. I wasnt comfortable with the term. It was problematic for me, personally, to [sign] out that far with players. Theres analytical data [that] shows where players play at their peak, and we wanted to try and stay within a window. We were ready to stretch that window but only to a certain level. But Backes said he has a lot left.Im 32, not 52, he said. I think theres plenty of legs and energy left in me. Virat Kohli has rated Indias players eliminating their hunger for personal milestones in favour of the teams cause as a major highlight of his tenure as Test captain.India sealed the series against England 3-0 in Mumbai with one match still left, and despite what the scoreline suggests they have had to work very hard. They lost three tosses out of four, they have made comebacks with the bat and their bowlers had to be highly disciplined to take wickets on good pitches. Kohli felt getting the better of such difficult situations required a bit of selflessness. One thing that I really wanted the team to do was express themselves in Test matches and not think about personal performances, he said, when asked what uncertainties he had when taking over the captaincy and when he thought he had nailed them. Because a lot of the times, you have an hour in the Test match where you can take the game away and you are still not willing to go for it because you are close to your milestone or things like that. These are the things that we have gotten out of our system completely. We just look at the situation and play and thats why we have been in winning positions more often than not. Even with the teams that we have played, we have made quite a few changes and the guys have bought into it. So as a captain that gives you total freedom to play the XI according to the conditions that you are going to play in, and the ultimate aim has been to win games and win series. The other demand Kohli made of his men was to not be satisfied with winning one Test in a series and sitting on the lead. Thats why we have won five [series] in a row, he said. And as I said, its been an outstanding effort by the guys so far. Long it may continue because we are going to play for another eight-10 years, and this mindset needs to continue for us to be a top-quality consistent side.Considering the effort India had to put in - across three back-to-back Tests - on fair pitches, Kohli believed the 3-0 over England was the teams best result in recent times.Out of the five that weve won, this is the best by far, he said. Because of the quality of the opposition, and the kind of cricket that weve played as well. Were very proud of that, and for me as a captain, this is definitely on top.I think the pitches have been far more true than the New Zealand series. That is something that I observed immediately. All wickets have been good cricket wickets and we have had to play good cricket to win these three Tests, and none of the matches have been surrendered by the opposition. We have had to work hard for it, and the bowlers have had to work harder in this series, I feel, to get batsmen out and to control the flow of runs as well. We have used more in-out fields in this series than we did in the New Zealand series so its pretty evident that the wickets have been better.Kohli was pleased with how India maintained constant pressure because England, he said, were not going to break down on their own. We have been put under pressure many times, he said. I think I would give my team a lot of credit for bouncing back from those tough situations. We havent got anything on the platter. We have had to work hard for it. And its been a result of constant pressure that we have forced the opposition to make mistakes. With the bat as well we have shown really good character to come back into the game, showing enough patience, more than the opposition, so I would credit my team more than calling it an easy series. No series win is easy, especially not this one. We know England is a quality Test side, and we knew that they would try to bounce back. Even in this game after being 2-0 down, they put 400 runs in the first innings. This is not a team that will throw in the towel. They will fight, and we saw another example of it. We were tested but we came out on top.One of the key factors in the resilience India have shown with the bat has been Kohli himself. He has made 640 runs in four Tests, scoring a double-century on a square turner in Mumbai, a big ton from 22 for 2 in Visakhapatnam, and a scarcely believable 81 in the second innings when he kept hitting shooters for fours.Still Kohli cherishes his hundred in the second innings in Adelaide more. Chasing 364, he took India within striking distance of a win, but a collapse in the end left him heartbroken.I am still personally very attached to the one in Adelaide in the second innings because that was the beginning of this transition, Kohli said. This has been an on-going process, so I have only gained from the energy around in the change-room and from the team-mates as well. But this probably can be second-best, in my heart I still rate the one in Adelaide in the second innings higher than the ones I have scored elsewhere. This innings was really satisfying. It was a test of patience. Knowing we are 2-0 up, we cant be taking anything for granted going into the last Test. You dont want to leave one Test with the opposition still having a chance to level the series. So from that sense, it was very important to wrap it up here.Vijay was going great guns, I was enjoying batting with him but then that collapse happened in the middle. So all sort of things come into your head, whether youre going to be able to reach 400 or if you want to get close to the target. The lead was never in mind at that stage, we just wanted to get close to 400.Things shaped up nicely, and then we thought a 40-50 run lead will be great. But eventually, we got 231 of them. That for me was a revelation of me understanding that yes, you can bat for longer periods than what you might have thought initially. If youre focused on what the team needs, you dont realise, you dont feel the tiredness, you dont feel the fatigue. Its all about what the team wants, and in that process, you can go on for longer than what you think otherwise. An advantage for India in keeping a focus on those small targets was that it helped them not to get dragged into the revenge series that the marketing machinery kept building an England tour as.Thats all for TRPs [ratings], Kohli said. I feel all these little visuals that you see on Star [host broadcaster] and TV before the series, a lot of the campaigns are pretty exciting for people to watch actually. They like those sort of things, people talking about the series and saying this one will thrash this one.As cricketers, honestly, its far from what we think about. We understand how the game goes, and how minute these moments can be in Test cricket of winning and losing games. If you focus on that, youre already taking your mind off what youre going to do. These things are just to spice things up for viewers, which is great. It engages fans well, but as cricketers we should understand what to pay attention and what not to. We cant expect these things not to be shown or displayed. Its our responsibility to focus on our job and the viewer should get what they want, which is exciting cricket and the campaign should help things spice up a bit as well. Cheap Kings Jerseys . Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi has called for the A-League to bring back retrospective punishment for acts of simulation.Throwing the issue into the spotlight ahead of Fridays clash with Melbourne City - whose midfielder Neil Kilkenny has been roundly criticised this week for diving - Aloisi said there had to be a strong stance taken by Football Federation Australia to eradicate it.Kilkenny was labelled pathetic by Fox Sports pundit Mark Rudan for falling to the ground in apparent agony after Adelaide Uniteds Isaias rubbed his hand in his face last week in an attempt to have the Spaniard sent off.Aloisi said he was sure referee Peter Green would be alert to any similar tactics at Suncorp Stadium.Im pretty sure if (Kilkenny) didnt get the message, the FFA, I know theyre not happy about any simulation, he said.I was in Europe for a long time, I know that in certain countries you actually practice it, players to go down a little bit easier.Thats not in the Australian culture, we dont want it in our game. The referees analyse games like we do, Im sure it will be stamped out very quickly.Aloisi said the best way to punish culprits would be after the fact, using video replays.Yoou get suspended for a bad tackle, for trying to hurt the opposition, and for me this is just as bad, he said.ddddddddddddTwo A-League players, Patricio Perez and Michael Baird, were retrospectively banned for diving back in 2010 but FFA hasnt taken similar action since.City coach John van t Schip said hed personally spoken to Kilkenny about his incident. We all know that its part of football but were not supporting those actions and Neil knows, he said.Look, there was clearly a hand in his face but maybe he over-reacted there. On the other hand, I dont think we need to make a big deal of it. Enough has been said about it.Meanwhile, Aloisi drew attention to pinning tactics used by City captain Bruno Fornaroli on opposition defenders, which he suspects might also be illegal. He likes to pin players around the box. What I mean by pinning, he actually holds you and I dont even know if thats allowed, but he does, and he uses his body well, he said.Weve worked on how we can defend against that and hopefully the players will be able to defend against it. Im also excited to return to Turkey and Albany (in the Bahamas). It could be a fun fall. It was difficult missing tournaments that are important to me, but this time I was smart about my recovery and didnt rush it.Woods was at Hazeltine National last week as a vice captain to U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III. Although he was visible and spoke afterward about being honored to one day be considered to be captain, he did not address his health or whether or not he would play next week. The Safeway tournament has nonetheless been advertising Woods participation, along with that of Phil Mickelson, who welcomed Woods return and said he hoped to be grouped with him doing the first two rounds. The Turkish Airlines Open, Nov. 3-6, is the first of three European Tour events known as the Final Series. Woods played the tournament in 2013 and tied for third. He is likely getting an appearance fee to compete. The Hero World Challenge, Dec. 1-4, is an 18-player event that invites players based on the world rankings and major championships. Woods has an exemption as tournament host. ' ' '

Until his 136-yard wedge shot on his final hole Thursday. "It was going right at it. (A 59) crossed my mind for a second, and it would be unbelievable if I buried this," Bradley said. "But I had 3 feet to shoot 60. I was actually very nervous, uncomfortable over it and thank God I made it." Bradley shot 10-under 60, completed by that short birdie at the 428-yard ninth hole, to break the TPC Four Seasons course record and match the best round ever at the Nelson. He topped his career PGA Tour best by three strokes and equalled Phil Mickelsons opening 60 at Phoenix as the best round on the tour this season. After missing the fairways off the tees and making bogeys at No. 18 and then No. 1, the latter starting his back nine when he drove into a bunker and had a par putt lip out of the cup, Bradley was at 3 under. He made a 17-foot birdie putt at the 221-yard second hole, and was 7 under his final eight holes with an eagle-birdie-birdie finish. "It was rare to match up a ball-striking day and make everything. ... It happened today," Bradley said. "The hole looked huge. Even the putts I missed almost went in." The 60, with 10 birdies and an eagle 3 at the 542-yard seventh, gave Bradley a three-stroke lead over 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel. Robert Karlsson, Harris English and Ted Potter Jr. shot 64, and two-time major champion Angel Cabrera, Ryan Palmer and Camilo Villegas were at 65. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., and Calgarys Stephen Ames opened with a 67. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., is another stroke back at 68. Ottawas Brad Fritsch shot a 69. Guan Tianlang, the 14-year-old amateur from China, shot 70 in his second tournament since making the cut at the Masters. The eighth-grader also made the cut in New Orleans three weeks ago. Guan was among 97 players at par or better -- 76 were under par -- on the 7,166-yard course after 1 1/2 inches of rain fell on the course Wednesday night from a storm system that spawned at least 13 tornadoes and killed at least six people in North Texas. There was no significant damage to the course, where players were able to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairways. "Seems like you dont get many of those opportunities, so being out here first was a bit of an advantage," said Schwartzel, who hit all 18 greens in regulation. "So much rain, it softened up. Played long off the tee, but its a big advantage going into the greens with the second shot. ... You could attack flags." Arron Oberholser shot 60 in the second round of the 2006 Nelson on the Cottonwood Valley course across the street that used to bee used the first two rounds.dddddddddddd Sam Snead shot 60 in the 1957 tournament at Glen Lakes Country Club, which at the time tied the PGA Tour record. Five players have shot 59 in official PGA Tour events. Al Geiberger had the first in the 1977 Memphis Classic, while Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby had the last three years ago. Ryo Ishikawa had the lowest round on a major tour, shooting a 12-under 58 on the Japan Tour in 2010. Bradley, the nephew of former LPGA Tour star Pat Bradley, got his first PGA Tour victory when he won a one-hole playoff with Palmer at the Nelson two years ago. Bradley has four consecutive top-10 finishes earlier this season, but missed the cuts in his last two tournaments. Palmers opening 65 came two days after attending the funeral of one of his best friends, who was killed in a car accident last week. Palmer found out about Clay Aderholts accident while at The Players Championship, where with a heavy heart and his friends initials on his cap he tied for fifth. "Trying to get back in the swing of things," said Palmer, who lives in nearby Colleyville. "Being at home is nice, my own bed, so that made it easier when I got back (from the funeral) Tuesday night." Palmer gave the white cap that he wore Sunday to Aderholts wife and signed it to his 4-year-old son. He gave a black cap with the initials to his late friends father. "We will always remember him and maybe we can honour him even more on Sunday afternoon," Palmer said. Defending Nelson champion Jason Dufner shot a 70 in a group with good friends Bradley and Matt Kuchar (69). "It was a regular round with Duff and Kuch. It felt like a Saturday morning round with my buddies," Bradley said. "It felt easy." There were even pre-round shenanigans when Bradley went into the champions locker room Thursday morning to find his clubs spread out on the floor and his open umbrella near his empty golf bag, courtesy of Dufner. "He loves to mess with me," said Bradley, who slyly retaliated. "Im too scared to do anything too much because I dont know what he will do. He could throw my clubs in the water. ... I did remove something from his locker that he is going to have trouble finding and hes going to need." Guan had a bogey at the par-3 second after his tee shot off the back of the green. He blasted out of a bunker to 3 feet for a birdie at the seventh hole, then got under par with a 13-foot birdie putt at the ninth hole. A three-putt bogey at the 406-yard 14th dropped him back to even. "I missed a couple of birdie putts in the middle but overall not a bad round," Guan said. "After the Masters and New Orleans, I still feel nervous on the first tee but not too much, and I handle it pretty good in the middle fairway and kept it going." ' ' '
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- DJ Durkin brings enthusiasm and a Big Ten background into his new job as Marylands head football coach.Unfortunately, the former Michigan defensive coordinator doesnt have a wealth of talent at his disposal. Durkin takes over a team that went 3-9 last season, 1-7 in the conference. The Terrapins dumped Randy Edsall in the midst of an eight-game losing skid that finally ended with a 46-41 win over Rutgers.Maryland has thus far landed several solid recruits under Durkin, who wont hesitate to put newcomers in the starting lineup. Its a deep freshman class with talent and its guys I know have the right mindset to come in and play and help us, Durkin said. The upperclassmen can feel the difference a new coach makes. The culture that Coach Durkins brought in, its really making everyone compete, senior quarterback Caleb Rowe said.Still, its going to take some time before the Terrapins can stand up to East Division rivals Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State.Durkin has assembled a solid staff that includes former Virginia head coach Mike London; former Ball State head coach Pete Lembo; defensive coordinator Mike Buh, who held the same job at Stanford and Cal; and offensive coordinator Walt Bell, whose Arkansas State team last year scored at least 37 points in nine games. You are only as good as the people youre around, and weve assembled a great coaching staff Im very excited about, Durkin said. You look at the experience level of the guys and their accomplishments professionally, I think that kind of speaks for itself. Some things to know about the Terps as they prepare for the 2016 season:QUARTERBACK QUANDARYThe competition at the most important position on the team could extend until the end of August.Seniors Perry Hills and Rowe are the front-runners. Hills has the edge because of his ability to run with the ball -- he ranked second on the team last year with 535 yards rushing -- but both have a propensity to turn the ball over. Hills tossed 13 interceptions and Rowe was picked off 15 times. True freshman Tyrell Pigrome, the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama, has an outside shot of starting or at least getting significant playing time.LIKELY A STARThe most electrifying player on the team is senior William Likely -- a defensive back, kick returner and part-time receiver.Likely considered entering the NFL draft last spring, but said, I just felt that I couldnt leave my teammates like that.A starter on defense, Likely scored twice on punt returns, took a kickoff 100 yards for a TD and caught five passes.KEY GAMESThe Terrapins probably cant compete with the best teams in the Big Ten, so their success lies in starting 3-0 out of the conference against Howard, Florida International and Central Florida, then securing a few more wins among home games against Purdue, Rutgers and Minnesota and on the road at Indiana.PREDICTIONA .500 finish and bowl eligibility would be a tremendous success for a rebuilding team under a first-year coach. More likely, the Terrapins are looking at 4-8 or 5-7, which would at least serve as an improvement from last season.SEASON OPENERThe Terrapins host Howard University, a perfect opponent to launch the Durkin era. The Bison went 1-10 last year, including a 76-0 loss to Boston College and a 49-0 drubbing by Appalachian State. Discount Sharks Jerseys .
