NEW YORK -- For Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, seeing Deron Williams back far outweighed seeing the Celtics again. Nike Air Max Plus Tn Ultra Customize . Williams scored a season-high 25 points in his return to the lineup, Brook Lopez added 24, and the Brooklyn Nets beat Boston 104-96 Tuesday night in the first matchup for Pierce and Garnett against their former team. "D-Will set the tone for how we were going to play tonight," Garnett said. Garnett had 11 points, just his third time in double figures this season, and grabbed nine rebounds. Pierce finished with four points and seven rebounds in his first appearance off the bench in six years after making a quick recovery from a broken right hand. But the key was Williams, who had missed nine straight games and 11 overall with a sprained left ankle, and hadnt been sharp in the games in which he did appear. "Hes the head of the snake," Pierce said. "I mean hes one of the most important pieces of what were trying to do here, what were trying to build and trying to win a championship." The Nets won consecutive games for the first time this season, a stunning stat for a team that considered itself a championship contender after acquiring Pierce and Garnett in a blockbuster that was agreed to on draft night. Both veterans had struggled, with the 12.4 points per game and .368 shooting by Pierce easily the lowest of his career before he was hurt on Nov. 29. The Nets had lost six straight at home, their longest skid since moving to Brooklyn. "Were starting to get whole and its definitely good to have everybody back," Williams said. "Even though Paul didnt start, I thought he came in and gave us a big boost off the bench. It seemed like our energy level was a lot better. More intensity on both ends of the floor." Avery Bradley scored 22 points and Jeff Green had 19 for the Celtics, who have been competitive after trading away two of their most important players from their 2008 NBA championship team. Boston had a three-game winning streak snapped and its Atlantic Division-leading record fell to 10-13. "The players that they had come back tonight, I still feel like they were a very good team. But obviously having two of their leaders as in Deron Williams and Paul, you know that definitely helps them out a lot," Bradley said. The Celtics had started with 14-0 and 12-0 leads in their last two games, the latter eventually ballooning to a 45-point bulge in a 114-73 victory over the New York Knicks on Sunday that was the NBAs most lopsided game this season. Brooklyn got off to the strong start in this one, pulled away again after Boston tied it, and put it away when Williams, who came in averaging just 9.3 points, scored eight in the final period. "They played great tonight. Played really hard, really together. They took us out of what we wanted to do," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. "Like I said, we werent playing the New Jersey Nets that played without D-Will for those 10 games. That is their team and theyre a good basketball team." Pierce was expected to miss two to four weeks, but sat out only four games before returning to practice Monday. He received a nice ovation when he checked in with a protective glove covering his hand midway through the first quarter, no doubt aided by the many Boston fans that were noticeable all around Barclays Center. He said hes still getting used to the glove, joking he might take it out to the movies, and might have to get used to a new role. Coach Jason Kidd said he would consider whether Pierce would remain with the second unit. Garnett gave a pat on the head and a little hug before the opening tip to Bostons starters, who go on to face former coach Doc Rivers and the Clippers on Wednesday. The Nets led 31-20 after one, their largest lead after the opening quarter this season, and 56-47 at the half. Boston quickly tied it at 60, but the Nets responded with 10 straight points, going ahead 70-60 on Williams jumper, and the lead reached 85-68 on Pierces free throw with 1:14 left. NEW YORK -- The old guard took care of this one for the Phillies -- with both their bats and their brains. Cheap Yeezy 700 Magnet . Ryan Howard had four hits, including a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, and Jimmy Rollins homered and scored four times to lead Philadelphia past the slumping New York Mets 5-4 on Saturday night. Chase Utley drove in two runs for the Phillies, who have won the first two games of the series against their NL East foes after dropping four straight to Toronto. Rollins, Utley and Howard, the All-Star core of Phillies teams that won five straight division titles and a World Series championship from 2007-11, combined to go 9 for 12 with four RBIs. "Yeah, it felt good. It felt like old times out there," Howard said. "If we can get everybody going all at the same time, itll be a force to be reckoned with." David Wright hit his first home run since opening day, ending the longest drought of his career, and had three RBIs. But the Mets wasted another great chance to score in the late innings, losing their season-worst fifth straight and eighth in nine games. Following some confusion in the eighth, Philadelphia reliever Mike Adams (2-1) escaped a major jam by retiring pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu on a bases-loaded comebacker to keep it tied. "Obviously, I had to make him swing the bat," Adams said. "I threw a two-seamer that ran down and made him hit my pitch." With runners on second and third earlier in the inning, the Phillies held a meeting at the mound and threw an intentional ball to Eric Campbell in his second major league plate appearance. Thats when Utley and catcher Carlos Ruiz noticed the 40-year-old Abreu, cut by Philadelphia near the end of spring training, getting ready in the dugout. Utley and Ruiz persuaded Adams to go after Campbell before Abreu had a chance to bat. "We decided to change our minds," Utley said. "We saw him coming up there. We try to see everything, but we dont always." Adams said the chat pumped him up, and Utley is "always on top of it." The intentional walk was called off and Campbell eventually took strike three. "That was pretty neat to watch," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. Rollins drew a two-out walk from Kyle Farnsworth (0-3) in the ninth and went to third on Utleys single. Howard followed with a line-drive single to centre. Jonathan Papelbon worked a hitless ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances. With a runner on second, he retired Wright on a foul popup to end it. A frustrated Wright held his bat above his head most of the way back to the dugout, then lingered on an otherwise empty bench for a few minutes with the lumber still in his hand. "The frustrating part is losing," Wright said. "An inning here, an inning there is costing us multiple games over the last few weeks." After the start was delayed 39 minutes by rain, the Phillies wasted no time jumping on Dillon Gee, who had a 7.46 ERA in nine previous starts against them. Philadelphia began the game with consecutive singles and a stolen base before Utleys sacrifice fly ended Gees career-best scoreless streak at 16 innings. Domonic Brown blooped an RBI single, but Gee dodged additional damage when Cody Asche lined out with the bases loaded. Wright tied it with a two-run shot on an 0-2 pitch from Kyle Kendrick, snapping a streak of 136 at-bats without a homer since March 31 against Washington. "I dont build my game around hitting home runs, so it wasnt too much of a monkey at all," Wright said. Rollins homered off the facing of the second deck in right to put Philadelphia ahead 3-2 in the second. Kendrick retired 14 of 15 batters after Wrights long ball and took a two-hitter into the sixth, when he walked leadoff man Juan Lagares. Daniel Murphy singled and Wright plopped an RBI double into right field, just beyond a diving Marlon Byrd. Campbell, with his parents taking pictures in the stands, was sent up to pinch-hit for his big league debut. He gave the Mets a 4-3 lead with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly against lefty reliever Jake Diekman -- and was all smiles while receiving a high-five from Murphy and congratulations in the dugout. "It was a real up and down day," Campbell said. Rollins legged out an infield single in the seventh and advanced on Scott Rices wild pitch. Utley doubled off the centre-field fence to tie it at 4. NOTES: Kendrick, hurt by poor run support, is 0-8 in 14 starts since beating the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 6 last season. ... Howard is 9 for 18 against Gee with six homers and 14 RBIs. Brossard, QC (SportsNetwork. Metta World Peace Jersey .com) - Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty did not practice Friday, a day after he left a game against Anaheim following a hard check into the boards. Stoner was not whistled for a penalty on the play, but drew a fighting major minutes later following a tussle with Canadiens forward Brandon Prust. (SportsNetwork. Joel Przybilla Jersey .com) - Oh, to be in the NFC South in 2014. If the Baltimore Ravens could jump regions and conferences prior to Week 14s slate of games, theyd head to Miamis Sun Life Stadium on Sunday with a comfortable two-game lead and at least one eye toward finalizing arrangements for a home playoff game in early January. Instead, the trip to South Florida - given the jumbled competitive reality that is the AFC this year - is far more in the class of full-on business desperation than leisurely holiday comfort. The Ravens and Dolphins are two of six conference teams with 7-5 records through 12 games, which means their get-together takes on particular urgency as the seasons final quarter gets under way. Baltimore seemed destined for a more stable 8-4 record and a firm hold on playoff destiny heading into the fourth quarter last week, but instead saw a 10-point lead evaporate into a 34-33 loss to San Diego. It was a second straight prolific performance for an opposing quarterback, with Philip Rivers amassing 383 yards and three touchdown passes just six days after Drew Brees threw for 420 yards and three scores in a game the Ravens ultimately won, 34-27, at New Orleans. Ravens QB Joe Flacco had two TD passes last week before the late meltdown. Miami enters the game with just 27 completions of more than 20 yards and just one TD pass of that length, but Baltimore coach John Harbaugh isnt lessening the emphasis on secondary performance. Weve got to make some plays, he said. Thats really what it boils down to. The return of starting cornerback Asa Jackson from an injured toe could help. The third-year man last played in Week 5 before being placed on the returnable injured reserve list. He had 16 tackles and a pass deflection in early season action before the hiatus. The loss of Pro Bowl defensive lineman Haloti Ngata certainly wont help. Ngata was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the leagues policy on performance-enhancing substances Thursday. Ngata said he took Adderall and apologized for the transgression that will keep him out of Baltimores remaining four games of the regular season. I made a mistake, and I own this, said Ngata in a statement Thursday. I took Adderall and take full responsibility for doing this. I am deeply sorry and broken up over this. I let down my family, my teammates, Ravens fans and myself. My hope is that the Ravens make the playoffs, and I believe they can do this. And, then I can come back and help us win. Ngata, in his ninth season with the Ravens, is the center of Baltimores defense as the prominent run stopper in the clubs 3-4 scheme. He has 31 tackles with two sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions in 12 games this season. This is disappointing news for the Ravens, said general manager Ozzie Newsome. We are disappointed with Haloti, but no more than he is with himself. The Dolphins defeated the New York Jets on Monday to improve to 7-5, but theyve allowed better than 200 rushing yards to two consecutive opponents for the first time in 24 years. Coincidentally, the Ravens backfield is occupied by Justin Forsett, who leads the NFL with a 5.6-yard average per carry and has gained 400 yards while scoring four times in Baltimores last three games. Flacco has four passing TDs and no interceptions in the same three-game stretch, and Baltimore for the season is sixth in the league with an average of 27.3 points per game. Its hard to overload the box because they have those threats on the perimeter, Miami coach Joe Philbin said. I think the key for them has been balance. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed just 21 of 40 passes in a three- point home loss to the Ravens in 2013, but hes been among the hottest QBs in the league lately - completing at least 70 percent of his throws in five consecutive games. The last two passers with six-game runs of 70 percent or better were named Favre (in 2007) and Manning (Peyton, in 2008 and 2012). Tannehill was 25-for-35 for 235 yards against the Jets. Their offense is a spread-option type of an offense that Tannehill runs very effectively - a lot of weapons, Harbaugh said. They spread the ball out, they spread the formations out, they run the read option, they run the dive, quarterback keepers, quarterback-follow plays. Miami, which is tied with Buffalo in the AFC East - two games behind New England - faces the Patriots next week before finishing with Minnesota and a home rematch with the Jets. The Dolphins last made the playoffs in 2008. Weve talked to them more about the month of December and the importance of each and every game in December, Philbin said. This one that we have coming up, Baltimore, both on paper and on film, is as good as team as weve seen. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Elvis is in the Backfield Baltimore pass rusher Elvis Dumervil has 12 1/2 sacks in 2014 and was a chronic thorn in Rivers side last week, forcing three hurries and hitting the San Diego QB twice. Right tackle Dallas Thomas draws the assignment against him after allowing three pressures, but no sacks, in Mondays defeat of the Jets. Thomas could be aided by Tannehills ability to throw while moving away from rushers. Beating the Replacement Miamis Cortland Finnegan was a no-go at cornerback against New York and is listed as questionable for this week. If hes again unable to play, or less than 100 percent, it tilts a matchup in the favor of Ravens veteran Steve Smith. R.J. Stanford started in Finnegans place Monday, but hell be much more challenged by Flacco and Smith than he was by the Jets tandem of Geno Smith and Eric Decker. OVERALL ANALYSIS Though the Dolphins have won five of their last eight games - and only dropped the other three by a combined 10 points - a noticeable theme across 12 games is that theyve feasted on lesser foes, and struggled with better ones. The five losses have all come against teams with at least seven wins, while the seven wins include Jacksonville, Oakland and the Jets. Baltimore is good, and matches up well. We have a huge game down in Miami, Harbaugh said. There will a lot on the line and theyll be ready and theyre good. Well have a great opportunity to make a move. Its going to be very competitive (and) down to the wire to make the playoffs, to win the division, and we are in the thick of it. CLEVELAND -- Another qualified coaching candidate has eluded the Browns. Harrison Butker Jersey . Ken Whisenhunts decision to accept Tennessees opening leaves Cleveland as one of just three NFL franchises still searching for a head coach. Whisenhunt, who guided Arizona to a Super Bowl, came close to being hired by the Browns last year and interviewed with the team on Saturday. San Diegos loss on Sunday in the AFC playoffs freed up teams to make offers to Whisenhunt and he chose the Titans after it appeared he was headed to Detroit. Its not known if the Browns tried to outbid the Titans for the well-regarded 51-year-old. With Whisenhunt no longer in the mix, the Browns moved into the third week of their quest to replace Rob Chudzinski without any clear front-runner, but with a new former NFL head coach on their list. The team has interviewed at least five known candidates and the Browns reportedly met Monday with former Titans coach Mike Munchak, also in consideration with the Lions. The 53-year-old Munchak, a Hall of Fame lineman, went 22-26 in three seasons with the Titans, who fired him on Jan. 4, ending his 30-plus-years association with the franchise. Clevelands degree of interest in Munchak isnt known since the team is not commenting on any interviews and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner have maintained a low profile since dumping Chudzinski after one season. And while there may not be a current favourite to take over as Clevelands seventh full-time coach since 1999, there are signs that Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase could be the Browns top choice. The 35-year-old Gase was the first candidate contacted by the Browns, but he informed them -- along with the Minnesota Vikings -- that he wanted to wait until after the playoffs to be considered. "I told both teams that were interested in me that I appreciated it and I was going to wait until after our season had concluded," Gase said on Jan. 3. "They were great about it. They said they appreciated me being up front and honest about it, and I thought that was the best decision for what we are trying to accomplish with our team." Its not known if Gase has agreed to an interview with either team. NFL rules prohibit teams from offering jobs to assistant coaches who are still in the playoffs. Gases decision to delay any interviews raised some flags about whether hes actually ready to be a head coach. But as long as hes paired with quarterback Peyton Manning, Gases profile will continue to grow and hell undoubtedly be coveted if he waits another year. Following Denvers win on Sunday over San Diego, Manning praised Gase during his postgame news conference for his play calling in helping the Broncos advance to Sundays AFC Championship against New England. In his first season as Denvers offensive co-ordinator, the Broncos scored an NFL record 606 points and led the league with 457.3 yards per game and 340.3 yards passing. His resume is impressive, but even if the Browns meet with Gase, its not a given he will be hired. Hes never been a head coach, and Haslam and Banner said they were determined to find a "strong winner who knows how to win football games" as they began looking for their second coach in just over a year. If the Browns chose to wait on Gase, they run the risk of the coaching talent pool drying up and being in a desperate situation should he turn them down. Cleveland has waited until after the Super Bowl before. Following the 2004 season, the Browns hired Romeo Crennel in the hours after the Super Bowl. The Browns are already losing a public relations war as the search has dragged on. After New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels withdrew his name from consideration for Clevelands opening last week, it heightened the perception that Cleveland is not an attractive job. It hasnt helped that some national reports have described the Browns situation as "toxic" and "radioactive." Haslam and Banner have also interviewed Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn, Arizona defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles and Green Bay quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo. FLORHAM PARK, N. Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Moins Cher .J. - Geno Smith believes he is still the answer.Yes, he knows he needs to get a lot better, and fast. But he also thinks the New York Jets search for a franchise quarterback, a mostly fruitless task since the days of Joe Namath, could end right in front of their eyes.Despite the boos, increasing criticisms and calls for Michael Vick.Well, thats still to be set, Smith said when asked Wednesday if hes a franchise-type QB.Obviously, its my goal, but weve got to work toward that and were still working toward that and I do believe that I am. But weve just got to continue to work on it.Rex Ryan and the Jets are sticking with Smith, and their public support for him hasnt wavered. Smith knows he needs to deliver, though. With five interceptions and two lost fumbles in four games, there needs to be improvement Sunday at San Diego.Otherwise, it could be time for Smith to sit and Vick to come in a€” a scenario some considered inevitable even before the season began. Its about wins and losses, Smith said. Weve got to win more games. Ultimately, thats the only thing. I dont think its about anything other than that.Smith insists the pressure isnt getting to him, but yelling an expletive at a heckler after the Jets 24-17 loss to Detroit last Sunday suggested theres perhaps a slight crack in what had previously been considered thick skin. He expects to get a letter from the NFL about that, and a fine, too.Always be above the situation, he said. Never let people get to you. Never let anyones words affect you in that manner. Its something Ive already known, but Ive just got to handle those situations better.A few minutes later, though, Smith bristled when he was asked if theres any value in playing Vick for a quarter in a game a€” which means Smith, obviously, would be sent to the sideline.I dont know what youre trying to lead to with that question, he said. Maybe thats your opinion. That is not a question. When the reporter suggested putting Vick into a game could provide a spark, Smith responded: As a spark? What do you mean a spark? Weve already put him in.Vick has seen limited snaps as Smiths backup, throwing one incomplete pass and rushing once for 3 yards. He didnt get into the game against the Lions, even as fans at MetLife chanted for him to replace Smith. So, Smith was asked if it could help the Jets by putting Vick in for not just a play or two, but an entire quarter a€” and he, predictably and understandably, got testy. It doesnt make sense, Smith said. What team do you see doing that?Well, none. The bottom line, though, for the Jets is this: They are committed, for now, to Smith. They want to find out for sure whether he is that franchise-type quarterback, and so far theyve had 20 games to evaluate him. With Miami, Buffalo and New England all 2-2 and the Jets 1-3, the AFC East appears to be wide open. So, Ryan needs to find the delicate balance between developing the young quarterback and preserving the season. After previously saying it would be a Jets decision, Ryan also clarified that any lineup changes are his call entirely a€” including whether Smith should be benched for Vick.I just thought it was so obvious that, obviously, in my position as the head coach you are going to make decisions during a game a€” who else is going to make them? Ryan said. Im not going to call (former lineman) Randy Rasmussen up and say, Hey, Randy what do you think? Or anybody. That falls on my shoulders, and I think its obvious. What became obvious is that I should have handled that question differently.Smith said he hasnt lost any confidence during this rough stretch, and his focus is on the Chargers a€” not what is being said outside the facility.I never needed to be reassured, Smith said. Ive always had confidence in my coaches and I believe theyve always had confidence in me. Theyve expressed those things, but I dont get caught up in that. That said, Smith knows what the statistics look like and where the Jets stack up in the standings. He also realizes that how he plays Sunday could go a long way in setting the tone for the rest of the season. For him, and the rest of the team.My progression is, obviously, Im getting better, but its all about wins and losses and Im trying my best to help us win these games, he said. Several key players, including captain Philipp Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, are carrying injuries into the camp in St. Leonhard, in the German speaking Alto Adige region. Lahm and Neuer will join the rest of the team later. Defender Per Mertesacker delayed his arrival by a day because of the birth of his second child. Another star, Sami Khedira of Real Madrid, will not join the squad until after the Champions League final on Saturday. Germany coach Joachim Loews camp will eventually include 27 players. The squad will return to Germany for a friendly against Cameroon on June 1, after which Loew will announce his final 23-man squad. Germany also plays Armenia on June 6, one day before departing for Brazil. The Germans open their World Cup campaign against Portugal on June 16 in Salvador, then play Ghana on June 21 in Fortaleza and conclude the group stage against the United States on June 26 in Recife. Loew said earlier this week that he was optimistic about Lahm and Neuer recovering for the World Cup. "But its good and important to have them with us in South Tirol from the start, even if they cant practice," Loew said. His players, however, decided to extend their break. While the remaining squad flew to Italy, Bayern Munichs players arrived by car -- minus Lahm and Neuer. While Lahm was expected to show up on Friday, Neuer was "day-by-day," but still expected to arrive at some point, team spokkesman Jens Grittner said. Yeezy 350 V2 Zebra Pas Cher. The decision for them to stay in Munich was reached mutually by Loew and team doctors, Grittner said. Lahm, nominally a defender, can also play in midfield, a role he has executed well at Bayern Munich. He injured his left ankle in the German Cup final on Saturday, when Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0. Doctors said he would not be able to train for up to seven days and Lahm said Wednesday he would stay home until Friday, while stressing that he would be ready for the World Cup. "I need to rest a few days but I will be top fit by the World Cup," Lahm told Bild newspaper in comments also published on the federations site. Lahm said Germany needed to work on its defence. "Weve allowed too many goals and too many chances recently. We have to pay more attention to our defence," he said. Neuer injured his right shoulder in the cup final and is wearing a brace. Khedira has yet to play a full match since coming back this month from a knee injury that had sidelined him for six months. A leader of the team, he is considered one of Loews key men. Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been nursing a knee inflammation and missed the cup final. Miroslav Klose, one of only two strikers in squad, has been bothered by a hamstring injury. Defender Mats Hummels has a foot injury and played the cup final on medication. He played only 23 Bundesliga games this season for Dortmund because of various injuries. Germany also trained in the same region ahead of the 1990 World Cup in Italy and went on to win the last of its three titles. ' ' '
This week, Stuart Barnes explains why he is excited by the appointment of Nigel Melville as RFU’s director of professional rugby. Charles Barkley Jersey . Plus, he looks at the winners and losers as the Premiership and PRO12 head towards the play-offs... 1. In England, the weekend rugby news was dominated by the imminent departure of Rob Andrew and his replacement, Nigel Melville. Andrew lost the faith of the general public and the media for not taking greater responsibility since his appointment in 2011.What I will say is that he had to take a share of criticism as a central protagonist in the appointments of Martin Johnson and Stuart Lancaster. Both were bad appointments for differing reasons. Nigel Melvilles USA experience will be invaluable, says Barnes To balance the negatives he is widely believed to have played the crucial role in the heads of agreement between club and country. That is no small achievement. However, more obvious rugby related results were expected. Melville will take back the development role Andrew lost. Great things are expected. Coming from Colorado to Twickenham, the very distance between the states and England will give him a fresh perspective. He has a sharp rugby mind, broad business experience and the knowledge of some of the most sophisticated sports thinking on the planet emanating from the US. The predominant reason for delight is Melvilles appointment, not Andrews imminent departure.2. Eddie has been setting out his time lines. The tour of Australia is a chance for England (as he sees it) to climb the world rankings.New Zealand, however, is in another league to every side and the target to overhaul them in Tokyo 2019 is ambitious enough. No more of this targeting 2023 nonsense, however. The age of excuses seems to have been left behind. Bring out the buntings! Jones plotting victory against Australia 3. Celebrations in Cardiff too where over 68,000 spectators were lured by a promise of exciting derby rugby and cheap tickets into the Principality Stadium for Cardiff Blues versus Ospreys; it is sad that such a great rugby nation as Wales needs something as corny as Judgment Day to lure the supporters, but in this instance it was a great success both on and off the field. Highlights of the Guinness PRO12 round 21 clash between Cardiff Blues and Ospreys Rhys Webb and the returning Scott Williams will have helped make the day of the Welsh management, too. Here is hoping Sam Warburtons injury is nothing too bad. Wales will need every man standing in New Zealand.4. It was billed as the shock of the weekend but was it really? Pat Lam rested most of his team against a Treviso side in a neck-and-neck battle with Zebre for the right to get hammered in the European Champions Cup. Highlights of the Guinness PRO12 round 21 clash between Benetton Treviso and Connacht. Any victories are rare for the Italian teams but a home win is hardly a once in a lifetime affair. Also, it has to be remembered that barring a draw against Glasgow next Saturday, nothing has changed in the Connacht versus Glasgow scrap for a home semi-final. The result in Treviso will not have knocked Treviso off their stride.5. The defending champions are in great form. I was starting to wonder whether there were any teams in the Pro12 league capable of giving them a game at the moment. Cue a trip to Belfast and a high paced, inventive, bustling and, more than anything else, an intelligent performance from Ulster. Highlights of the Guinness PRO12 round 21 clash between Ulster and Leinster This was only their second win in eight games against Leinster. The Dublin-based side have looked as if they would be vulnerable to good teams all season (as they were in Europe). With two sides playing so well I do not fancy their chances of regaining the Pro12 title this season; Glasgow remain my idea of firm favourites but if Ulsters half backs can keep playing as well as they did last weekend we have at the very least a serious challenger.Theyll need to play well just to make the play offs. The Ospreys have not given up on a European Champions Cup spot as they showed last Saturday and with Scott Williams back, the Scarlets have been reinvigorated ahead of their must win game in Limerick this weekend. Fourth place is in Ulsters hands but expect the Ospreys to make life incredibly difficult in Swansea.6. Saracens fans had a bit of a fright. Trailing 3-14 to Newcastle at half-time, there might have been a few worried Fez Heads but once they threw away their Dubrovnik holiday gear they stormed back to win the game and clinch top spot in the league table. All roads now lead to Lyon. Chris Wyles of Saracens shakes the hand of Jacques Burger as the Namibian walks off in his last match 7. I am sure they will have noted Racing 92s impressive win over Clermont. The Parisian side have a strong squad, some outstanding individuals and a determination to make this a memorable season. There is not much doubt a late Leicester breakaway in the semi-final would have made this an easier final for Saracens.8. It was Exeter who took a few weeks to put the misery of their last second European elimination at the hands of the Wasps behind them. On Sunday their quarter-final conquerors suffered the same fate after losing to Saracens in the semi-finals. One more win and the Chiefs will have the advantage of a home semi-final in the Premiership with Wasps expected to again be the visitors. However, Harlequins will be a tough final game. It will be Conor O Sheas Stoop farewell and the Quins will be looking to send him to Italy on a high.9. Wasps should have a fairly straightforward task of claiming maximum points with London Irish down and out. The Irish can start planning for an immediate return next season while Wasps must ready themselves for a tilt at the English title. Saracens are by some way the best team in England but with the European final before the domestic denouement who knows what victory or another defeat will do to them? Jack Tovey scores for Bristol against Bedford. 10. GREENBURGH, N. Discount Vapormax .Y. -- Raymond Felton is determined to keep personal turmoil from affecting what was already his most trying season professionally. A day after his arrest on felony weapons charges, Felton returned to practice with the New York Knicks on Wednesday, saying that was "not a distraction" to the team. Felton spoke for less than a minute and did not take questions. He thanked family, friends and teammates for their support and insisted his thoughts were on the Knicks game Thursday night in Miami. "This is not a distraction to this team," he said. "Im focusing on finishing out this season, finishing out these games with my teammates and going down to Miami, focusing on this next game at task versus the defending champs." The Knicks are barely hanging on in the playoff race and Feltons struggles have been among their biggest problems. Slowed by nagging leg injuries early, hes averaging a career-worst 10.4 points on 40.3 per cent shooting for a team with a 21-36 record. Hes also dealing with the breakup of his marriage, and he was arrested early Tuesday after authorities said a lawyer for his wife turned into a police precinct a loaded semi-automatic handgun allegedly belonging to the point guard, claiming she no longer wanted it in their home. Felton was released on $25,000 bail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for June 2. Knicks coach Mike Woodson said he never considered not letting Felton play against the Heat. "The bottom line is Ray is a part of our team, and as his coach Im going to support him and make sure hes doing everything the right way from here on out, and to try to get him to just concentrate on basketball and practice and playing games," Woodson said. Felton was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and criminal possession of a firearm. The firearm charge is punishable by up to four years in prison. The weapons charge is punishable by up to seven years in prison. He had turned himself into police not long after a 110-108 loss to Dallas dropped the Knicks farther back in the playoff race. His wife, Ariane Raymondo-Felton, filed for divorce last week, according to court records, and Felton acknowledged recently dealing with personal problems. He said he wouldnt comment on the case, referring any questions to his lawyer. "But other than that, Im here to concentrate on this team, finish this season out with the New York Knicks and see what happens, man," Felton said. "Trying to make it to the playoffs. Were 5 1/2 games out, 25 games left, so Im really focusing on that with these guys, with the team and trying to make that happen." Felton was playing well in his first stint in New York before he was traded to Denver in the middle of the 2010-11 season as part of the package for Carmelo Anthony. He had a dismal 2011-12 season for Portland, admitting he reported out of shape because he wasnt sure if, or when, the lockout might end. Yet the Knicks surprisingly re-signed him that summer, a move that paved the way for them to let Jeremy Lin leave as a free agent. Felton rebounded with a strong performance last season in helping the Knicks to their first Atlantic Division title since 1994, but neither he nor the team has been able to build on that. Felton has played better lately, and centre Tyson Chandler said he was focused at practice Wednesday. "He seemed like he was no different," Chandler said. Felton still could face punishment from the NBA, though likely not until the legal process has been completed. He is set to earn $3.8 million next season and has a player option that would pay him $4 million in 2015-16, and any attempt by the Knicks to void his contract would be met with a strong challenge from the players association. For now, Felton and the Knicks are just trying to salvage the season. "My job is to continue to coach and try to get guys to do the right thing on and off the basketball floor. I take pride in that, so when things creep in like this, its a surprise, but again weve got to get through it," Woodson said. "Again, I dont know the legal part, the severity of it. All I know is Raymond is still with us and Im on Raymonds side in terms of trying to make sure that hes doing the necessary things to play basketball and Im going to continue to do that." Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork. Jack Sikma Jersey .com) - Erik Karlsson netted the game-winning goal 1:21 into overtime and the Ottawa Senators battled back from a three-goal deficit to top the Vancouver Canucks, 4-3, on Sunday. Mika Zibanejad, who finished with two goals and two assists, dropped a pass back to Karlsson in the slot and the Ottawa captain beat a screened Eddie Lack with a wrister for the win. David Legwand scored on the power play to spark the comeback, Bobby Ryan tallied three helpers and Craig Anderson made 30 saves for the Senators, who ended a five-game skid. Radim Vrbata had a goal and an assist, while Brad Richardson and Kevin Bieksa also scored for Vancouver, which got 41 stops from Lack in its second straight loss. (Lack) played so well, Vancouver head coach Willie Desjardins said. That gave us a chance, but we couldnt do it. The Canucks opened the scoring with two goals in a span of 65 seconds during the first period. Vrbata stickhandled his way around Anderson and slipped the puck into the net at 6:10 and also assisted on Bieksas slap shot from the high slot at 7:15 for a 2-0 Canucks lead. Richardson increased Vancouvers lead after snapping home a shot 5:02 into the second, but Ottawa answered back with three goals of its own in the second period. Things didnt go our way at the start, but we stuck with it and actually came back with a push, Senators head coach Paul MacLean said. Legwand fired home a generous rebound over the shoulder of Lack for a power- play marker past the midway point. Zibanejad gathered his own rebound, skated behind the net and banked the puck off the skate of a defender and into the net for a 3-2 game with 5:48 left in the second. Canucks defenseman Christopher Tanev blocked Ryans shot from the right side, but Zibanejad was there to take the puck and drag it across the slot with his backhand before finishing the play with a patient backhander for a tie game with 1:02 to play before the second intermission. Ottawa threatened in the latter stages of the third, most notably on Ryans turnaround shot in the slot with just over two minutes to play, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game went to overtime. PHILADELPHIA -- The brisk air brought out Julio Teherans best more so than facing Cliff Lee. Raja Bell Jersey . Teheran pitched a three-hitter, Evan Gattis homered among a career-best four hits, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 Wednesday night. Teheran (3-1) retired his first 12 batters before Ryan Howard led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single. The 23-year-old righty struck out four and got 14 outs on flyballs in his first complete game in 38 career starts. He became the ninth Braves starter in the first 14 games this year to allow one run or none. "The cold didnt bother me," Teheran said after breezing through the lineup on a night when it was only 47 degrees at first pitch. "When its cold, I try to focus even more and not pay attention to the weather." As for beating a former Cy Young Award winner, Teheran said: "I dont pay attention to who Im pitching against." Philadelphia wasted an excellent outing by Lee (2-2). The ace left-hander struck out 13 and pitched around 11 hits in a complete game, throwing a career-high 128 pitches. Gattis drove an 0-2 pitch into the left-field seats in the fourth. It was his fifth homer in his last three games at Citizens Bank Park. "I was just trying to put the ball in play," Gattis said. Lee, a prolific strike-thrower, often gets hurt on 0-2 pitches. He entered the game with five hits allowed, including two doubles, among a dozen 0-2 pitches. "Im going to allow hits 0-2 and Im going to get outs 0-2," Lee said. "I hope I get every hitter in that situation." After the slow-footed Howard reached on a slow roller toward second base that was fielded by shifted third baseman Chris Johnson, Teheran retired the next 11 batters before Carlos Ruiz lined a single to left with two outs in the eighth. Jimmy Rollins hit a single with two outs in the ninth. Rollins stole second on a 3-0 pitch to Chase Utley. But Utley following with a game-ending groundout. "Teheran mixed speeds on his fastball, had different movement on his speed and mixed in his other pitches," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. Pitchers certainly had the advantage against bundled-up hitters. "Both pitchers were unbelievable," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Lee was excellent. The homer just got over the fence. A surprisingly good ice rink was straight ahead, glistening in the Hollywood night. "We felt like rock stars," Anaheim defenceman Ben Lovejoy said. "That was by far the coolest feeling Ive ever had playing hockey." After all the spectacle and sensation of the NHLs first warm-weather outdoor game, Jonas Hiller and the Ducks demonstrated whos on top of this rivalry -- with or without a roof. Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey scored first-period goals, and the Ducks beat the Kings 3-0 at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. Hiller made 36 saves in his 20th career shutout as the league-leading Ducks dominated the landmark meeting of Southern Californias two hockey teams under the stars in Chavez Ravine. Andrew Cogliano added an empty-net goal with 1:29 left to close this unusual chapter in the NHLs expanded slate of outdoor games. "Its a little different playing out here, but its nothing that threw us off," Hiller said. The league threw a California carnival for the event: People in shorts and tank tops played Frisbee and practiced yoga between periods while skateboarders rolled past a ball hockey court featuring youth teams. Although the temperature was 63 degrees with significant humidity when Wayne Gretzky dropped the first puck, the ice held up fairly well in the night air. The Ducks had no problems adjusting to the new sightlines and backgrounds while shutting out the Kings. "It was maybe a little slower than some rinks, but it was smooth," Anaheims Teemu Selanne said. "Were used to not-good ice out (West) anyway. The whole package was incredible. You dont have that many chances to play in front of 55,000 people. This was pretty high on my bucket list." The Ducks earned their 21st victory in 24 games, beating Los Angeles for the second time in three days. The Kings lost their fifth straight game. The Kings hosted the first official outdoor game west of the Rocky Mountains in recognition of the NHLs near half-century in Los Angeles and their rivalry with the Ducks, who joined the league two decades ago. And though this game bore little resemblance to the snowbound outdoor contests in northern climes, the excited fans and enthused players embraced this unorthodox version of pond hockey with gusto. "I cant see any reason we shouldnt do this more," Selanne said. "The quality of hockey was greatt. Mark Ingram Jr. Jersey. Im going to remember this." The teams wore specially designed jerseys for the game, with the Kings crown logo dominating their grey jerseys while the Ducks sported bright orange. After a day filled with fan events and celebrations of the cold-weather sports rich California roots, Anaheim showed whos currently in charge of this rivalry. The Ducks followed up their 2-1 victory in Thursdays rivalry meeting in Anaheim by opening a seven-point lead over Chicago atop the overall standings. Jonathan Quick made 18 saves as the Kings matched their longest skid of an otherwise solid season. After getting a goal in the opening minutes of Thursdays loss, Los Angeles hasnt scored in 116 consecutive minutes against the Ducks. "As for us not scoring goals, its been a constant theme, and its getting embarrassing," Los Angeles defenceman Drew Doughty said. "So we need to pick up our socks, and everyone needs to get hungry around the net and score goals." Hiller made 20 saves and stopped Anze Kopitars penalty shot in the first period, and the Swiss netminder turned away every good scoring chance after that in his fourth shutout and 24th victory of the season. Just 2:45 in, Perry scored the first goal in Dodger Stadium history, connecting rather easily on a rebound of Ryan Getzlafs shot off a faceoff. Less than six minutes later, Beleskey was alone at the side of Quicks net to score on a play set up by Selannes pass. Kopitar was awarded a penalty shot midway through the period when Lovejoy hooked him on a breakaway, but the Kings leading scorer couldnt do much with the puck, and Hiller stopped it. "The experience was fun and it was exciting, playing on a stage like this in front of all those people, but it was definitely not the outcome we wanted," Kopitar said. The Edmonton Oilers, eager to get back on track, host the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night at Rexall Place. Dusty Baker Jersey . The Oilers have been idle since a 2-1 overtime setback to the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Edmonton salvaged a point and prevented a shutout loss of its own when Taylor Hall scored with 10.3 seconds left in regulation. Devan Dubnyk was solid with 25 saves before giving up the winning tally 3:14 into overtime. Edmonton, which was coming off an 8-2 win over Colorado, fell to 1-1-1 on a five-game homestand. The Oilers and Canes have split their last six meetings in Edmonton. Carolina picked up a 5-3 victory in the most recent encounter there on Dec. 7, 2011, its second straight win in the series. Dubnyk is 0-1-0 with a 4.34 GAA in two previous meetings with the Hurricanes, including one start. The Hurricanes opened up a four-game swing on Monday night in Vancouver and were blanked 2-0 by the Canucks and backup goaltender Eddie Lack, who made 31 saves in his first career shutout. Carolina backup Justin Peters gave up one goal and finished with 24 saves for the Hurricanes, who had a season-high, three-game win streak snapped. "I think as a team we deserved a better fate," said Peters. "We played the right way, we had some chances. Just give credit to their team and Lack was playing well." Carolina was shut out for the second time this season and for the first time since a 3-0 setback at home to Tampa Bay on Nov. 1. The zero-goal effort came on the same day that Canes forward Jeff Skinner was named the NHLs First Star for last week. Skinner was coming off a week-long span in which he led the league with five goals and added an assist. No. 1 netminder Cam Ward should get the start tonight for the Hurricanes and is 3-3-0 with a 2.53 goals against average in six previous meetings. "It was nice to score that goal late. It was a huge rush and a boost for the team to send it into overtime," said Hall, who was named the leagues Second Star for last week on Monday after notching four goals and two assists. Neither was the first World Golf Championship he won Sunday at Firestone. Another major awaits next week. McIlroy cant wait to get there. Two weeks after his wire-to-wire win at Royal Liverpool, McIlroy took his game from the links of Britain to the parkland of America and made the game look just as easy. With another powerful performance, he wiped out a three-shot deficit to Sergio Garcia in three holes, closed with a 4-under 66 and returned to No. 1 in the world with a two-shot victory in the Bridgestone Invitational. He looked just as good as the last time he reached No. 1 in the world during his torrid stretch at the end of 2012. "This is better," he said. "Mentally, Im really sharp. I didnt start to think about score. I didnt think about where I was in the tournament. I just playing shot after shot after shot. So yeah, its good." Garcia wasnt at his best and closed with a 71. Hes not sure it would have mattered. "Everybody saw it," Garcia said. "He played very, very well. He drove the ball miles and very, very straight for the most part. He gave himself a lot of birdie looks." McIlroy finished the third round with two straight birdies, and not even one day and a rain delay slowed him. He punched an 8-iron out of the rough, under the trees and up the slope to an elevated green to 3 feet to open with a birdie. He drilled a 4-iron from 219 yards into 25 feet for a two-putt birdie at the second, and then followed with a gap wedge to 8 feet for a third straight birdie. Garcia made bogey from the rough, and just like that, he was trailing. The Spaniard never caught up. McIlroy became the 13th player with a major and a World Golf Championship, and he joined Tiger Woods as the only players to win them in consecutive starts. Woods wasnt around to see it. Four months after back surgery, and in his third tournament since his return, Woods injured his lower back when he landed with a thud in the stand from an awkward stance atop a bunker on the second hole. He withdrew after a tee shot on the ninth hole, bending over slowly and struggling to remove the tee from the ground. It was not clear he Woods could play in the PGA Championship next week. McIlroy heads south to Valhalla with a full head of steam. After a brief celebration with the claret jug, he was determined to move forward and chase more titles over the final four months of the year. He backed it up with a powerful performance on a soggy Firestone course to take the top spot in the world from Adam Scott. Orlando Cepeda Jersey. "Thats the most pleasing thing about this week is not dwelling about what happened at Hoylake," he said. "Thats what Ill have to do after this, as well. Ive just got to keep moving forward. Its great to have a chance to try to go there to win three in a row. But if youd have asked me what Im proudest of this week, its the mindset that I took into here of not being complacent. I wanted to come here and really contend." McIlroy finished at 15-under 265 and won $1.53 million, leaving him $765 short of Bubba Watson on the PGA Tour money list. More important was the world ranking. He lost the No. 1 position in March 2013 when his game was in a downward spiral as he was adjusting to a new equipment deal and going through another management change. But since winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth at May, his game looks as strong as ever. "Obviously, Rory is in incredible form at the moment," Scott said. "Hell be the man to beat next week by the look of things. And Ill be gunning for him, for sure." Garcia was a runner-up to McIlroy for the second straight time. The Spaniard had the daunting task of making up a seven-shot deficit at the British Open, and Garcia put up a great fight until finishing two shots behind at Hoylake. Staked to at three-shot lead at Firestone, it didnt go much better. Garcia missed a 6-foot birdie on the par-5 second hole with a putt that never looked as if it was going in. His lead down to one, Garcia pulled his tee shot into the gallery on the third hole, striking a woman on the hand and knocking the diamond out of her ring. The diamond was found, about the lone bright spot in his day. Garcia made bogey, and McIlroy rolled in another birdie putt to take the lead. Garcia made only one birdie, on the ninth hole to share the lead. McIlroy answered with an 8-foot birdie on No. 11 and was on his way. Marc Leishman (67) finished alone in third. Patrick Reed holed out for eagle on No. 17 in his round of 65 and gave him a tie for fourth, enough to move him up to No. 7 in the Ryder Cup standings and boost his hopes of making his first team with only the PGA Championship left in the qualifying period. Phil Mickelson made 10 birdies for a career-best 62 at Firestone. None of that could top McIlroy, who put on another exhibition and looked every bit the part of the worlds best player. ' ' '

(SportsNetwork. Joe Girardi Jersey .com) - The Los Angeles Clippers will dust themselves off from a recent loss and close out a three-game road trip Saturday against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Bradley Center. The Clippers had a nine-game winning streak cut short with Fridays 104-96 loss to the Washington Wizards and were unbeaten in five straight on the road. Chris Paul led the visitors with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Blake Griffin scored 14 points and Jamal Crawford totaled 12 for Los Angeles, which made 42.7 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 18 times for 21 Washington points. Paul coughed up the ball six times and Matt Barnes five. We played a little uncharacteristic tonight, Paul said. I dont know the last time I had six turnovers. LA, which is 8-3 as the guest, opened the trip with a win at Indiana on Wednesday and will play two in a row at home versus Detroit and the Pacers. The Clippers are fourth in the NBA with 106.4 points per game and had scored 100 or more points in each of the previous nine games. Milwaukee is well rested and last played in Tuesdays 114-101 setback to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Russell Westbrook scored 28 points and Kevin Durant added 23 to lead OKC. O.J. Mayo paced the Bucks with 18 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo added 17 and rookie Jabari Parker scored 15 points for Milwaukee, which shot 40.5 percent and lost for the fifth time in the last six tries. We missed a lot of shots that we normally make and I think that carried over to our defense, Bucks head coach Jason Kidd said. The Bucks will have to slow down a hungry Clippers team looking to get back on track and are allowing 100.5 ppg. They have a 6-4 home record and will start a four-game western jaunt Monday in Phoenix. Milwaukee has scored 100-plus points in 11 of the past 13 contests, including eight straight. Perhaps that will help against the high-scoring Clippers. The last time the Bucks scored 100 or more points in nine straight games was from Nov. 30 - Dec. 18, 1991. Los Angeles and Milwaukee will play the first of two meetings this season Saturday and are slated to battle Dec. 20 out west. HOUSTON -- Dirk Nowitzki scoffed at the notion that hes playing as well now as he did when he led the Dallas Mavericks to a title in 2011. He will, however, concede that at age 35 hes having a pretty good season. Nowitzki scored 31 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Mavericks to a 111-104 win over the Houston Rockets on Monday night. He joked that his big night was simply luck before getting serious and discussing the work he puts in off the court. "Hopefully I can light it up a couple of more years and then slowly fade away," he said, breaking into a huge smile. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle isnt surprised at what Nowitzki, who is averaging 21.5 points a game, is doing for his team this season. "Hes the great Dirk Nowitzki," Carlisle said. "Hes one of the great players in the history of the game." Nowitzki missed the first 27 games of last season after knee surgery and the Mavericks missed the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. He feels like his game is good now and his injury is behind him, but he wants to do more. "The driving the ball is whats missing a little now," he said. "I do a lot of one or two dribble and then up, but I want to get back to driving some more to the basket and get to the foul line. I dont think Im in 11 shape, but compared to the last two years I feel a lot better. The right knee is great and I feel better." Nowitzkis performance on Monday night gave him 25,629 career points, which moved him past Alex English for 13th place in scoring in NBA history. Houston cut the lead to six after a 3-pointer by Aaron Brooks with about 3 1/2 minutes left, but Nowitzki knocked down consecutive baskets to push the Mavericks lead to 107-97. Houston coach Kevin McHale was frustrated that his team was unable to slow Nowitzki down. "We tried a bunch of different stuff," McHale said. "We tried showing and coming back. We tried staying on there. We tried running at him. Nothing seemed to work." Dwight Howard had 29 points and 15 rebounds for the Rockets, who were playing their second straight game without leading scorer James Harden, who was out with a sprained left ankle. Dallas started the final period by using a 9-4 run powered by three 3-pointers, including two from Jae Crowder, to push the lead to 95-82. Craig Kimbrel Jersey. Jeremy Lin, who has been out since Dec. 13 because of back spasms, scored 20 and Chandler Parsons had 21 for Houston. Dallas outscored Houston 17-10 over the last five minutes of the third quarter to stretch a one-point lead into an 86-78 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Vince Carter scored seven points during that time and Crowder added five. Monta Ellis had 18 points for Dallas, Carter had 16 and Jose Calderon added 15 points with five assists. With the speedy Harden out, the Rockets relied on their inside game and outscored the Mavericks 60-32 in the paint. But the Mavericks had the advantage from 3-point range, where they made 11 to Houstons seven 3-pointers. "They hit a lot of tough shots tonight, especially in the second half," Howard said. "They shot great the whole game. When a team is shooting that good they are tough to beat." A 15-1 spurt by Dallas to open that second half erased a seven-point halftime deficit and gave the Mavericks a 65-58 lead with eight minutes left in the third quarter. Nowitzki led the way in that stretch, making seven points including a 3-pointer. The Rockets came out flat to start the third, missing six shots and turning the ball over twice in the first few minutes of the quarter. The Rockets finally snapped out of their offensive slump after that, using a 10-4 run to get within 69-68 with about 5 1/2 minutes left in the quarter. Parsons made four quick points near the end of it before Howard put an exclamation point on the run with a nifty sideways alley-oop dunk. Houston led by one point about six minutes before halftime and used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to extend its lead to 52-42. Howard got things going in that span by scoring six straight points and capped the run with a free throw. The Rockets led 57-50 at halftime. PARIS - Hard-serving John Isner was broken a total of once through his first three French Open matches. Allen Iverson Jersey . His opponent Sunday, Tomas Berdych, needed all of one game Sunday to equal that total, breaking Isner at love to begin their fourth-round encounter. As omens go, it was telling. The 10th-seeded Isner failed in his bid to become the first American man in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros since Andre Agassi in 2003, losing serve once in each set of a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat against No. 6 Berdych of the Czech Republic. "It was big. I mean, it wasnt huge, but I started off a little slow," said Isner, best known for winning the longest match in tennis history, 70-68 in the fifth set, at Wimbledon in 2010. "Just wasnt as lively — everything really — at the very beginning of the match." The 6-foot-10 Isner, who lives in Florida, was the last of the eight U.S. men in the draw. No American man has made it to the quarterfinals at any Grand Slam tournament since 2011. There is one woman from the United States left in singles at the French Open: No. 15 Sloane Stephens, who faces No. 4 Simona Halep of Romania in the fourth round Monday. Isner recognizes this is a fallow period for a nation that produced the likes of Agassi, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier not too long ago, along with other past Grand Slam champions such as Bill Tilden, Don Budge, Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. Right now, there are no Americans in the top 10 of the ATP rankings; Isner, who is 11th, is his countrys only member of the top 60. "Im the No. 1 American now, which isnt as cool as being the No. 1 American in the 90s or something, or the 2000s," the 29-year-old Isner said. "Its pretty neat to say, but its nothing I would brag about or anything like that." Isner has lost seven consecutive matches against top-10 opponents and he never really got into the match against Berdych, the Wimbledon runner-up and a French Open semifinalist in 2010. Berdych broke again to open the second set, then waited until Isner was serving at 1-all in the third to get that sets lone break. "Quick breaks in each of the sets," said Berdych, who erased the two break points he faced. "Thats something which really helps through all the match, especially with a guy like John." By the end, Isner was muttering to himself between points. He slammed his racket against his leg, bending the frame, then folded the handle in half and chucked it behind his changeover bench at Court Suzanne Lenglen. He was outaced by Berdych, 11-7, and wound up with more than twice as many unforced errors, 29-13. "He was a lot better than me today, and thats really all it was to that match out there," Isner said. "He was just the better player." ___ Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrichJaren Jackson Jersey . JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Charl Schwartzel shot a 3-under 69 Saturday to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the South African Open, the season-opening event on the European Tour. Schwartzel moved to 15-under 201, with Morten Orum Madsen (69) and Marco Crespi (70) tied for second at Glendower Golf Club. South Africas Hennie Otto surged into fourth with a 65, another stroke behind on 13 under. Schwartzel has won just one European Tour title since clinching the Masters in 2011 and has never won his home open. He mixed five birdies with two bogeys to put himself in a good position to claim the first title on the 2014 Race to Dubai. "It was a bit up and down but I think I did what I needed to do," the South African said. "You always think some things could have been better." Madsen also had five birdies and two drops to sit one off the pace alongside Crespi. Earl Watson Jersey. Otto, the 2011 champion, fired the round of the day to put himself in contention on Sunday despite a triple bogey seven on the par-4 No. 9. Otto responded to that slip with seven birdies in his last eight holes to move into fourth. Italys Andrea Pavan and Spains Alejandro Canizares are tied for fifth on 11 under and Swedens Magnus Carlsson is a shot back in a tie for eighth. Two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen is still just about in contention for a first tournament win since March 2009 after his 70 on Saturday. Goosen is six shots back on Schwartzel after lifting himself with five birdies on his second nine following three dropped shots going out. Former British Open champion David Duval of the United States and European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley of Ireland missed the cut. ' ' '
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Tony Cingrani . -- Zach Johnson made a quadruple-bogey 8 on his second hole and still managed a 67 in the Honda Classic on Thursday. Tiger Woods had good birdie chances on his opening four holes and couldnt break par. Johnson made seven birdies after his soggy start -- two straight shots into the water -- and it took a few minutes for him to digest a wild round at PGA National. He looked as though he might have shot himself out of the tournament, but he ended the round two shots behind co-leaders William McGirt and Rory Sabbatini among the early starters. "It was easy to put behind me because it was the second hole," Johnson said. Woods was playing for the first time in a month -- and only his third tournament this year -- and he didnt show many signs of rounding into form. Coming off pedestrian finishes at Torrey Pines and Dubai, the worlds No. 1 player couldnt make any putts until he was scrambling for par. He had only three birdies in a round of 71 and likely will start the second round Friday outside the cut line. "I hit it good starting out," Woods said. "Hit it kind of scrappy in the middle and then hit it good at the end." The big blow came on No. 2 when he pulled his tee shot into thick rough, advanced the ball only about 25 yards, found a bunker and took double bogey. British Open champion Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy were among the late starters at a tournament that features seven of the top nine players in the world, making it the strongest regular PGA Tour event of the season. McGirt is getting used to this position. Just two weeks ago, he had a two-shot lead going into the final round at Riviera until he closed with a 73 and tied for sixth. In his next start, hes right back at the top. McGirt had a tap-in eagle at No. 3 and kept bogeys off his card. "About as well as Ive played since Ive been out here," McGirt said. "Just stayed out of my own way." Sabbatini is a past winner at the Honda Classic. Brendon de Jonge, Derek Ernst, Tommy Gainey and Brice Garnett were among those at 66, while Luke Donald joined Johnson in the group at 67. Johnson had a day to remember. Anyone with an 8 on the card before breakfast gets cold has reason to think the tournament effectively is over. Johnson looked to be in shock as he stood in the 11th fairway. He was between a 6-iron and a 7-iron, went for the 6-iron and saw it come down in the water. Because he carried the water the entire way, he had to drop well back in the fairway. Johnson went up 10 paces (still behind the hazard line) and went with the 7-iron. That didnt make it. So he took a few steps back and changed to the 6-iron and pulled that to the left back of the green. "That was the worst shot I hit of the three," he said. But instead of getting down, Johnson thought back to the time he was in the second stage of Q-school. On the opening hole, he took an 8. "I hit the ball eight times without a penalty," he said. "And I finished second." He still had at least 34 holes remaining and started putting them to good use, especially how he closed out the back nine with three straight birdies. "Not surprising knowing how tough this guy is," said Woods, who played alongside Johnson and wound up four shots worse. "He was pretty stoked about what he did today." Woods is still trying to emerge. As the defending champion and an eight-time winner at Torrey Pines, he missed the 54-hole cut. At Dubai, where he was a two-time winner, he tied for 41st. Woods has played in only four tournaments, not including the Presidents Cup, since the Tour Championship last September. He talked Wednesday about possibly altering his pre-Masters schedule, though he has not made clear what he meant by that. The biggest issue was converting birdie chances. He opened with three shots pin-high, two from about 18 feet, the other from 6 feet, and never touched the hole. "It certainly wasnt together today," he said. "Didnt get into a roll early." Heyward homered and drove in two runs, Andrelton Simmons had two RBIs, and the Atlanta Braves won their third straight game with a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. "If they keep having (at-bats), maybe they put up another run or two," Heyward said. "Defence is going to win the game at the end of the day, but its good to score runs, and it got us going a little bit." Returning from the All-Star break, the Braves moved one game ahead of Washington in the NL East. Last-place Philadelphia dropped 11 games behind Atlanta. Jimmy Rollins led off the eighth with a walk against Jordan Walden, the third Atlanta pitcher, but was thrown out at second base on Chase Utleys strikeout. Heyward, the right fielder, then charged in to make a diving catch of Ryan Howards liner. "You get so used to seeing him make those kinds of plays," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of the 2012 Gold Glove winner. "Thats why for me he might be the best right fielder, if not in the (majors), definitely in the National League." The game was played in a steady drizzle, but the rain had nearly stopped when Braves closer Craig Kimbrel earned his 30th save in 34 chances. He got Marlon Byrd on a groundout and struck out Grady Sizemore and Cody Asche. Ervin Santana (8-6) gave up six hits, three walks and four runs -- three earned -- in six innings to win for the third time in four starts. He struck out one. Phillies starter A.J. Burnett (6-9) allowed six runs, 10 hits -- the last nine with two out -- and one walk in five innings. He had five strikeouts as Philadelphia lost its third straight. Burnett was clearly mad at himself as he walked off the field after the fifth. "Six runs in five innings pretty much nails it on the head," he said. Ryan Helsley. "I was in counts where I should have made pitches and I didnt. Thats the bottom line. I made pitches to get to that point, didnt make pitches after that. I dont have excuses. I didnt get it done." Upton had an RBI single, and Simmons drove in two runs with a double. Atlanta made it 6-2 in the fifth on RBI singles by Heyward and Tommy La Stella. "They clumped (hits) together and put the four runs and two runs up in that fashion," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Not the start we wanted the second half. We had some good at-bats, though." Philadelphia cut the lead to 6-4 in the sixth. Rollins reached on first baseman Freddie Freemans fielding error and moved to third on Utleys double. Jermaine Kearse had one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history during the drive, juggling the ball before hauling it in while on his back.Kearses 33-yard grab put the Seahawks on the 5 with 1:06 left, seemingly plenty of time to go in for the winning score.___THE PLAYSeattle ran another play after Kearses catch, reaching the 1 on a run by Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks still had 26 seconds left, but instead of running again, Carroll called for a pass. The play was supposed to be quick-hitting, with Ricardo Lockette ducking inside Kearse to interrupt New Englands coverage.Butler reaacted quickly, though, going around Kearse and teammate Brandon Browner to reach the ball at the same time as Lockette. Ron Boone Jersey. Butler ran into Lockette around the goal line and came up with the ball, falling forward after making the interception.___THE DECISIONCarroll has been known as a gambler and he rolled the dice with success at the end of the first half, calling for a pass play with 6 seconds left that led to a touchdown. With the Seahawks seemingly in position to win their second straight Super Bowl, Carroll took another risk by deciding to throw the ball instead of running.Seattle had some success running the ball and Lynch, who ran for 102 yards on 24 carries, is one of the NFLs toughest running backs to tackle.Lynch gained four yards on the play after Kearses spectacular catch and the Seahawks still had 26 seconds left, enough time to run the ball at least twice more.Instead, Carroll called for a pass and Butler picked it off to seal the Patriots fourth Super Bowl title. For it to come down to a play like that, I hate that we have to live with that, Carroll said. The Ballon dOr tends to go to a player who has performed exceptionally well at the World Cup, someone who won it, said The Frenchman. He added: So this year it should be for a Germany player. It was always that way until 2010 when Leo Messi won despite having a fairly average World Cup, so nothing is for certain. Platini is a man who has a right to live in the past. After all, his greatest successes, as a player, occurred there. The problem with living in the past, however, is that you lose sight of what happens in the present. In Platinis case, it seems, this includes the recent past as he adds fuel to the flames around the myth of Messis average 2010 World Cup. We should not cast too much of a judgment on the 59-year-olds memory of South Africa 2010, as there is a more significant point to be made here, although for someone who puts so much onus on that tournament you would expect more. Yet therein lies the real problem. Platini only spoke about this issue for less than 90 seconds this week but already got himself in a muddle. He went on to use examples of past winners of the award in World Cup years, such as Igor Belanov in 1986 because he had a good World Cup. So, to clarify, its not just someone who wins it then, Michel? Of course the award, then, was only eligible for European players, which is why Diego Maradona didnt win it. Messi, of course, in a year when he is now eligible, was named the best player at this years World Cup. This all just weakens Platinis argument even more. As UEFA President the last thing he should be doing is using history as a guide to dictate what should happen in the future around an award that is completely different than in the past. Some feel he wants to generate interest in the award by steering the process away from the inevitable, a battle between the games best two players, by some margin, Ronaldo and Messi. A similar campaign happened last year when the media portion of the vote incredibly awarded more first place votes for Bayern Munich midfielder, Franck Ribery. Platinis ideas, though, are archaic and shine a spotlight on an area of the game where identifying the reliance of individual quality is much more difficult. It is one thing to put the onus on the award based on the World Cup if the club game was significantly behind international football. Yet, as this week as shown, it is the exact opposite in terms of overall quality and entertainment. It has been an interesting few weeks for club against country debates. Raheem Sterlings tiredness, Diego Costas hamstring and Don Garber vs Jurgen Klinsmann have been some notable chapters that needed to be told. The World Cup in Brazil was, undoubtedly, a marvellous month of football, with Germany coming out worthy winners of arguably one of the finest World Cups of all time. Yet, since, the international game has been rapidly forced back on us as nothing more than a distraction of annoyance. Yes, sure, there has been some surprising results at the start of qualifying for a tournament in two years time, but the club game has been left disjointed; frustrated by two large, less than meaningful, international windows before thhe middle of October full of many games that were nothing more than all-star exhibition games. Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Miglior Prezzo. Club football was finally pushed back on stage this past week and responded with a bang, highlighting the true top level that the worlds greatest players can reach. Watching the likes of Messi and Ronaldo attempt to reach their peak while playing for their countries is an exhausting exercise. Playing with club teammates they simply generate the relationships they need each week to excel. The international game does not give them this opportunity. Yet, the popularity of the World Cup, coupled with comments such as Platinis, make people believe that the elite should be at their best when, in fact, the odds are severely stacked against them. It is little wonder countries like Germany and Spain, which specializes in a team philosophy over individual brilliance, has excelled in recent years. To appreciate the true world class brilliance of the likes of Messi and Ronaldo is to watch them each week for Barcelona and Real Madrid and, in particular, when they grace us with their talents in the Champions League as they did this week. Ronaldos finish at Anfield, from a subtle pass by James Rodriguez, simply couldnt happen for Portugal. It was a sensational goal born out of a combination of true understanding and quality. The same could be said for Messis goal against Ajax on Tuesday when he ran into space and anticipated a pass that only a true visionary could pull off. Thankfully, for Messi, Andres Iniesta was the maestro who delivered the ball. For Argentina, it would have simply been a run no one else would have seen. It is the Champions League where such brilliance is highlighted, a tournament that, remarkably, some had the knives out for this week. As followers of the sport we can be a fickle bunch. Tuesdays games returned scorelines of 6-0, 0-7 and 1-7, which prompted many to question the competitiveness of the entire tournament. What a great pity. We can be guilty of not appreciating things that happen in the immediate. Just ask Platini. Twenty years ago this week the first legs of the last 16 of the European Cup took place. Reigning Ballon DOr winner Platini and his Juventus took on Grasshoppers of Zurich over two legs. Lyngby of Denmark, Beveren of Belgium and Linfield of Northern Ireland were amongst the teams in the last 16 of club footballs elite competition. Platini would go on to win the European Cup that year, playing just nine games, most of which were vastly inferior to the Italian champions. It would be the World Cup that would provide the only showcase for the best players to meet. Things have changed dramatically since. As consumers of a sport we love, we crave greatness. That it happens infrequently makes it more special. What the likes of Bayern Munich, Ronaldo and Messi continue to do on the biggest club stage of all should not be discounted because its not in a tournament called the World Cup. As guardians of history we have a responsibility to future generations to tell stories of greatness and, thanks to the Champions League, we are crucial witnesses to this far more often than those who knew Platini more as a player than the leader of a governing body who is simply out of touch when searching for where the best of the best perform. Won Not Done, the shirts read. The sentiment - also on tees made for opponent Ohio State - was perfect for the Ducks, who are a win away from proving once and for all that they belong among the nations elite. Its a position theyve been in once before, when they faced Auburn for the national title to cap the 2010 season and came up short. Weve still got to finish this. Were one step closer to achieving everything we ever worked for, everything we ever wanted, senior linebacker Derrick Malone Jr. said. Oregon has never won a national championship. The Buckeyes have seven national titles dating back to 1942. Just a decade ago, the Ducks finished the season 5-6 but theyd flirted with national prominence in 2001 when quarterback Joey Harrington helped lead Oregon to the Fiesta Bowl. Then Chip Kelly arrived in Eugene in 2007 and reworked Oregons offence into a distinctive high-flying spread. Since then, the speedy Ducks have been consistently ranked. Kelly was promoted from offensive co-ordinator to head coach before the 2009 season and the next year the Ducks went 12-1 and first played for the title. Oregon fell to Auburn 22-19 on Wes Bynums 19-yard field goal as time expired. Afterward Kelly vowed, Well be back. Kellys successor, Mark Helfrich, made good on the promise: Here the second-seeded Ducks are, following a 59-20 victory over Florida State in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State defeated Alabama 42-35 in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans later Thursday night. The loss in college footballs first-ever playoffs snapped a 29-game winning streak by the third-seeded Seminoles, and Oregon emphasized its dominance by piling up the most pointts ever scored in a Rose Bowl game. Yeezy 700 v2 Vanta Fake. It was quarterback Jameis Winstons first -- and maybe only, if he decides to go to the NFL -- college loss. They were undefeated the last two years, and I mean just that in itself says a lot about what theyve been able to do. Coming in, we didnt focus on that, quarterback Marcus Mariota said. We just wanted to focus on ourselves and really just trying to execute to the best of our abilities. But in the midst of the game, Oregon also took a huge step in changing the national perception of the Ducks -- shoving aside the image of a gimmicky team with a multitude of uniforms that could never stand up to the defending national champion. I hope they keep saying they (the Ducks) are soft, because it just motivates our guys, offensive co-ordinator Scott Frost said. Mariota is the personification of Oregons ascent, becoming the first Duck to win the Heisman Trophy. He has an ongoing conference record with 40 touchdown passes this season. Hes also passed for a touchdown in each of his 40 games of his college career -- the longest streak in FBS history. The junior from Hawaii, who opted at the end of last season to stay at Oregon, has 56 total touchdowns this season. Along with his 40 via pass, hes also run for 15 scores and caught a TD pass. Hes the first FBS-level player to pass for 40 and run for 15. Never one to put the focus on himself, Mariota was grateful for the opportunity to add to the teams legacy with a shot at the title. All the hard work, all the stuff that we put into it during the off-season and for it to kind of pay off and allow us to be a part of this game, its a great feeling, he said. Were very fortunate to be a part of it, and were excited to get going and get prepared for it. ' ' '
