BALTIMORE -- The Toronto Blue Jays want to take even tighter control of the American League East and the Baltimore Orioles hope to pull closer to first place when the teams start their crucial three-game series on Monday at Camden Yards. The Jays (74-56) completed a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins on Sunday with a 9-6 victory and held a 1 1/2-game lead over the Boston Red Sox, who played Sunday night.Baltimore, meanwhile, has slipped in recent weeks but came on late for a 5-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon in New York. That avoided a three-game New York sweep and kept the Orioles (71-59) in third place, three games behind Toronto. The games being played in Baltimore could help the Orioles, who have fared much better at home than on the road. They have a 42-22 record at Camden Yards despite losing five of six there on last homestand.Even though the Orioles have been struggling some in recent weeks, they are intent on staying in this race until the end.Its going to be a dogfight, said Baltimores Steve Pearce, who homered and drove in three runs in Sundays win. Its the AL East in September. Its what its all about, and were going to have them at our place. Were going to go out there, bring everything we got, and were going to take care of business. The Blue Jays will make it tough because theyre hot right now. Josh Donaldson homered three times Sunday in the victory over Minnesota, something he has never done before in his career. Its nice, Donaldson told reporters after the game. Its kind of one of those things as a baseball player you want to have it happen one day, and you dont know if its ever going to happen. Its a rare thing, and I was happy to do it.Wade Miley (8-10, 5.51 ERA) will start for Baltimore, but the left-hander has struggled since the team acquired him from the Mariners in a late July trade. He won his first game with the team in his last start, beating Washington but going just five innings.Hes 1-2 with an 8.18 ERA in his five Orioles starts.Marco Estrada (7-6, 3.47) starts for the Blue Jays, and he also has run into trouble lately. He has given up 11 runs and 15 hits -- with five homers -- in nine innings of his last two starts, getting a no-decision against the Yankees and a loss to the Angels. The Orioles made a flurry of bullpen moves during the weekend to help a taxed group, and one of them paid off Sunday when newly signed Tommy Hunter threw a shutout inning. He had spent much of his career in Baltimore before being traded to the Chicago Cubs last year.Theyre also hoping center fielder Adam Jones can return. He left early in Fridays game with New York with a strained left hamstring and missed the rest of the series, but MLB.com said that he might return Monday. The Jays picked up catcher Dioner Navarro this weekend, and MLB.com reported Sunday that he should come to the team on Monday. Also, he served as Estradas catcher last year with the Jays.Plus, right-hander Aaron Sanchez, who had been with Class A Dunedin as Toronto has been watching his innings carefully, will come back Wednesday and start the third game of the series.Toronto leads the season series 7-6, but Baltimore has won both series at Camden Yards. SEATTLE -- A night that began with cheers for new Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. echoing through Safeco Field ended with chants for Shawn OMalley, a kid that grew up a few hours southeast of Seattle idolizing the Hall of Famer.A little surreal for OMalley? Yep. Deserved? Absolutely. The fact it ended like that, it just seemed like a Griffey type of night, OMalley said. A home run to go up, late in the innings, it was just fitting.OMalley capped Seattles comeback with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Mariners rallied from a four-run deficit for an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.A few hours after the Mariners retired Griffeys No. 24 during an emotional pregame ceremony, OMalley sent another charge through Safeco Field. OMalley turned on an 0-1 pitch from Deolis Guerra and drove it into the right-field seats for his second home run of the season.Moments later, OMalley made a backhanded stop deep in the hole at shortstop to get Andrelton Simmons for the first out of the eighth inning and briefly Safeco Field began chanting OMalleys name.It was pretty hard to miss. It was pretty loud, OMalley said. That was pretty special, pretty cool. Never had that happen before. The conclusion to the day was celebratory for the Mariners, but it certainly didnt start that way. Seattle fell behind 3-0 on Mike Trouts 21st home run of the season in the first inning, and trailed 5-1 after Trouts RBI triple and Albert Pujols sacrifice fly in the third.Arguably the best center fielder of this generation was doing his best to upstage a night belonging to one of the best center fielders ever. But the Mariners chipped away at the deficit, taking the words of Griffey from his pregame speech when he looked at the Seattle dugout and told this current crop to keep fighting as it hangs on the fringe of the wild-card race. Guillermo Heredia hit the first home run of his career leading off the third inning and Franklin Gutierrez added a two-run shot in the fifth to pull within 6-4.Seattle missed an opportunity in the sixth inning by leaving the bases loaded. Reliever Mike Morin feell behind 3-0 to Gutierrez, who was given the freedom to swing and popped up to shortstop for the second out.dddddddddddd Robinson Cano then popped out to right field to end the threat. The Mariners finally took advantage of the shaky pitching in the seventh. Jose Valdez (0-1) opened the seventh getting Nelson Cruz, but then issued three straight walks to load the bases. Valdez was called up from the minors on Saturday. He looked good against Cruz. He threw some really good breaking balls but then just lost his release point, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.Leonys Martins sacrifice fly off Guerra pulled Seattle within 6-5 before OMalleys shot.Confidence has gotten into him, Seattle manager Scott Servais said of OMalley. He believes hes a big league player and I think youre seeing it in front of our eyes.BULLPEN PICKUPDrew Storen (2-3) got the final out of the seventh to pick up the victory and Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his fourth save. But the star for Seattle was Cody Martin, who pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Taijuan Walker. Martin allowed only two hits, one of them an infield single.Everybody is having a good time and were like a little family out there, Martin said. We just have a great time during the games.ROSTER SHUFFLEAngels: RHP Tim Lincecum was designated for assignment on Saturday after giving up six runs in the first inning a night earlier. Lincecum was 2-6 with a 9.16 ERA in nine starts with the Angels.Mariners: Seattle made a pair of trades, acquiring Arquimedes Caminero from Pittsburgh and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte from Toronto for players to be named later. Caminero is expected to report to Seattle on Monday, while Venditte is headed for Triple-A.UP NEXTAngels: Matt Shoemaker (6-11) will go for his second straight victory. Over his last 15 starts, Shoemaker has a 2.85 ERA.Mariners: James Paxton (3-5) looks to build on his last start when he allowed one run in eight innings against Boston but ended up being left out of the decision.
