STANFORD, Calif. -- Dorian Pickens scored 17 points and Stanford beat Colorado State 56-49 on Sunday in a matchup of two teams still trying to figure out how to consistently score. They certainly did a great job playing a very compact defense, but we also made some mistakes, said first-year Stanford coach Jerod Haase, whose team improved to 4-0 but had its lowest point total of the season. We didnt capitalize on certain things. We need to make a few more open shots. The biggest thing is we need to get the ball inside.Pickens made 4 of 6 from 3-point range, but was the only player on either team to shoot with success from the perimeter. Pickens teammates were a combined 1-for-12 and the Rams were 5-for-18.Stanford, which won its third home game in a span of six days, also got 11 points from Reid Travis. But the junior forward, who averaged 21.7 points through the Cardinals first three games, managed just five shot attempts against a collapsing CSU defense. They made it tough for us to get the ball inside, Stanford point guard Robert Cartwright said. Its a great opportunity for us to grow. We havent really been challenged this way. We have to find ways to win and we did that. The Rams (2-1) hadnt been held under 50 points since a 56-43 loss to San Diego State on March 13, 2015.Colorado State coach Larry Eustachy played a young lineup that included as many as three sophomores and a freshman at times. We expect this is going to be a time when were going to learn. Its as good a defensive team as Ive had in a long time for such young kids, Eustachy said. They werent more physical than us. I thought we tried really hard. You just cant overcome 20 turnovers.Prentiss Nixon led Colorado State with 15 points. Braden Koelliker, who averaged 14.5 points in the teams first two games, was scoreless. We were close against a very good Stanford team, Eustachy said. Im not sure our guys believed we could beat them, and I thought we could. Well get it right.BIG PICTUREStanford: The Cardinal is 4-0 under first-year head coach Jerod Haase, although early success is not necessarily indicative of long-terms results. Previous coach Johnny Dawkins started 10-0 in his debut season of 2008-09 (including a win over Colorado State) before the Cardinal lost 90-60 to Arizona State in its Pac-10 opener. Stanford wound up finishing ninth in the conference.Colorado State: The Rams need to shoot the ball better. They converted just 38 percent from the field -- including 6 for 33 from the 3-point arc -- in their first two games. They were worse against a stronger Stanford defense, making just 29.8 percent (14-for-47).UP NEXT:Stanford, having concluded a three-game homestand, treks east to play in the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, Florida, where it opens the three-day event against Miami (3-0), which averaged nearly 87 points in three easy victories.Colorado State returns home for a Wednesday night matchup vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-4), which comes off a 116-79 loss at Wichita State and will play its fourth game in five on the road. John Stockton Jersey . - Chris Tierney snapped a tie with a power-play goal late in the third period as the London Knights rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Erie Otters 5-3 in Ontario Hockey League action on Wednesday. Jeff Hornacek Jazz Jersey .ca. Hey Kerry, big fan of yours, just finished reading your book. I think that we all saw the Canucks/Flames line brawl just after puck drop. It was obvious that something was about to happen, even to the referees because the fourth lines were on to start. http://www.jazzauthentic.com/kids-karl-malone-jazz-jersey/ . Brett Kulak and Jackson Houck of the Vancouver Giants were each charged with assault causing bodily harm on Aug. 18, according to the B.C. court services. Jeff Hornacek Jersey . Los Angeles star goalie survived those perilous gymnastics with no problem, and he eventually backstopped the Kings to a skid-snapping win. Quick stopped 27 shots in his return from a 24-game injury absence, Jeff Carter scored the tiebreaking goal with 7:55 to play, and the Kings snapped their five-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Adrian Dantley Jersey . According to a report from the Winnipeg Free Press, the Bombers will name Acting GM Kyle Walters to the post full time. The streak was going to end sooner or later. Still, Florida didnt expect it to end in the fashion it did.The Gators left Neyland Stadium in stunned silence after blowing an 18-point halftime lead in a 38-28 loss to rival Tennessee. The defeat ended Floridas string of 11 consecutive wins over the Volunteers.No. 23 Florida (3-1) will look to regroup on Saturday (noon, ET) when the Gators take on Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. The Gators are hoping their second trip to the Volunteer State will have a better ending than their first. The big thing moving forward is what are we going to learn from this and how are we going to let it affect us, Florida coach Jim McElwain said of the Tennessee loss. We have a lot of football ahead of us and theres a lot that we can accomplish. It will be interesting to see how we handle people writing us off, jumping off the ship.Vanderbilt (2-2) is coming off a 31-30 overtime win at Western Kentucky. The Commodores are led by a pair of junior standouts -- running back Ralph Webb and linebacker Zach Cunningham. They play disciplined, they play sound, McElwain said. And I think Cunningham is one of the most underrated players in the league.Florida has plenty to clean up following its second-half collapse. The Gators normally air-tight secondary allowed Tennessee senior quarterback Josh Dobbs to throw for 319 yards and four touchdowns. A Florida offense that moved the ball effectively in the first half went three-and-out on five second-half drives. They came and took it to us, McElwain said. Thats disappointing. We gave them a lot to cheer about.Meanwhile,Vanderbilts performance last week was a mirror image of that of Florida. After a poor effort in a 38-7 blowout loss to Georgia Tech, the Commodores found themselves with a meager five yards of total offense and a 7-0 deficit after the first quarter at Western Kentucky. But the Commodores hung around and instead, found themselves victors as a rroad underdog.ddddddddddddWebb scored on a 2-yard run on the last play of regulation, pulling Vandy even for the first time since the opening minutes of the first quarter. After the teams traded touchdowns in overtime, Western Kentuckys pass for a potential game-winning two-point conversion was batted in the air and intercepted, giving the 8.5-point underdog Commodores the 31-30 victory. The key to Vandys offense was the up-tempo approach it had on the final drive of regulation. With no timeouts left and 1:02 on the clock, quarterback Kyle Shurmur was money, making several nice throws to lead the Commodores down the field to set up Webbs tying run.In overtime, the confidence and rhythm carried over. Shurmur, on a third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, threw a bullet to tight end Nathan Marcus in traffic for the go-ahead score.Shurmur has shown that he can be effective in that type of offense in games and practices. The question now becomes whether the Commodores want to run it.There are two problems. First, the Commodore receivers had a hard time finding space in the first half. When the Hilltoppers played looser coverage in the final minutes, certainly that helped.Second, the defense has faltered considerably since last year. Dating back to the last two games of 2015, Vanderbilt has given up 486 yards or more in five of those six contests. It may be a good idea anyway.Shurmur was yanked from the opener against South Carolina after a first-half scoring drive and couldnt find a groove once he was re-inserted after a pair of drives. Shurmur missed his first seven passes against Middle Tennessee State, but in a pair of rapid-fire drives to end the first half, he hit 13 of his next 14 throws.Since that 0-for-7 start against the Blue Raiders, Shurmur is 50 of 76 for 541 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
