arlottesville since Nov. 3, 2012, when Virginia beat North Carolina State 33-6.UCONN: The Huskies three games this season
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Brady said Friday he will not ask the U.S. Supreme Court to block his four-game Deflategate suspension, ending his fight in a scandal that tested the power of the NFL commissioner and tarnished the reputation of one of the sports greatest players. It has been a challenging 18 months and I have made the difficult decision to no longer proceed with the legal process, the New England Patriots quarterback said in a Facebook post . Im going to work hard to be the best player I can be for the New England Patriots and I look forward to having the opportunity to return to the field this fall. The decision by the four-time Super Bowl champion comes two days after his case was turned aside by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Bradys only remaining hope to take the field when the Patriots open the season against Arizona on Sept. 11 had been a stay from the nations highest court, which accepts about 1 percent of the appeals submitted.More worrisome for Brady and the Patriots, though, was the chance that he would receive a stay -- which would require only the blessing of a single Supreme Court justice, in this case Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- only to have the whole court later refuse to hear the case. That could allow the suspension to fall at a more inconvenient time in the season, perhaps including the playoffs. This decision was made in the interest of certainty and planning for Tom prior to the New England Patriots season, the NFL Players Association said in a statement Friday. The union said it was still considering whether to seek on its own a Supreme Court ruling that would limit Commissioner Roger Goodells authority to punish players. Dropping the case now would leave in place what the union called this week a broken system that must be fixed. But even if the union fights on, Brady would still sit out the first four games of the season, when the Patriots face the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans and Bills. Backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who has spent the last two years as the backup, is expected to start for New England instead.Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has split with longtime league allies over the punishment, renewed his complaint that the suspension was unprecedented, unjust and unreasonable.Unfortunately, this stopped being about air pressure a long time ago, he said in a statement . This entire process has indelibly taken a toll on our organization, our fans and most importantly, Tom Brady. His reluctant decision to stop pursuing further action and to put this situation behind him is what he feels is best for the team in preparation for this season and is fully supported by me and our entire organization.Brady is eligible to return in Week 5, when New England visits the Cleveland Browns. Despite the suspension, the Patriots remain overwhelming favorites to win the AFC East for the 13th time in 14 seasons, and the gambling website Bovada listed them as the top choice to win the Super Bowl.An NFL spokesman said the league would have no comment.Originally suspended four games after the league concluded the Patriots intentionally underinflated the footballs used in the AFC Championship game on Jan. 18, 2015, Brady embarked on an odyssey to clear his name that has now stretched into its third season. A federal judge overturned the suspension, allowing Brady to play last season, but the 2nd Circuit reinstated it this spring.Along the way, prominent scientist have questioned the leagues conclusions and legal scholars have doubted whether Goodell abused his power by punishing Brady a hefty four games merely for being at least generally aware of the deflation scheme. Organized labor argued that the commissioners actions threatened workers everywhere. But the appeals court panel found that the commissioner was acting with the wide-ranging authority granted to him by the collective bargaining agreement.Local fans stood by their quarterback, lashing out at the league and chanting Free Tom Brady not just at Patriots games but also when watching the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics. Kraft, who was instrumental in forging the labor deal that included the process upheld by the courts, took the nearly unprecedented step of opposing the league in court. What Tom has had to endure throughout this 18-month ordeal has been, in my opinion, as far removed from due process as you could ever expect in this country, he said. From day one, I have believed in Tom and given him my unwavering support in his pursuit to rightfully clear his name of any wrongdoing.A two-time NFL MVP who has led New England to the Super Bowl six times, Brady will be allowed to practice with the team when it reports to training camp on July 27 and play in any exhibition games. His suspension will take effect on 4 p.m. on Sept. 3, when rosters are trimmed to 53 players. Brady will not be allowed to have any contact with the team until the suspension ends on Oct. 3, a day after Game 4 against the Buffalo Bills.Garoppolo relieved Brady six times as a rookie and completed 19 of 27 passes for 182 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown to Rob Gronkowski on his fourth career pass attempt. Although he spent last year on the cusp of replacing Brady while the Deflategate appeals wended their way through the courts, he did not throw a pass in 2015.Whether youre a starter (or) backup, youve got to have a starter mentality, Garoppolo said on the eve of the season. EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- UConn kicker Bobby Puyol sought out Virginia kicker Alex Furbank after the Huskies 13-10 win over the Cavaliers on Saturday.Puyol had hit the game winner from 43-yards out with 1:33 left, then watched from the sideline as Furbank, a walk-on playing in his first football game at any level, missed a 20-yard field-goal attempt for Virginia as time expired.I just told him, `Man youre going to do a good job, youre going to get plenty more kicks, Puyol said. Sometimes you make them, sometimes you dont.It was the second game winner this season for Puyol, who had three extra points blocked a year ago. His 37-yard field goal with 11 seconds left beat Maine in the Huskies season-opener.I just knew, Puyol said. I said, `Get it down in field-goal range, ready to go and Ill make it.UConn Quarterback Bryant Shirreffs completed 13 of 24 passes for 154 yards. He also ran for 33 yards and a touchdown as the Huskies (2-1), overcame an early 10-0 deficit with two fourth-quarter scores.A 20-yard run by Shirreffs and a 23-yard screen play to Noel Thomas set up Puyols game winner. But Virginia (0-3) got the ball back and moved right down the field. A 33-yard strike down the left side from Kurt Benkert to Doni Dowling put the Cavaliers in UConn territory. It appeared they would at least send the game into overtime after Benkert hit Keeon Johnson with a 34-yard fourth-down pass to put the ball inside the UConn 10.The Husky defense stiffened, stopping Benkerts keeper at the 2-yard line on third down. The Cavaliers, who had no timeouts remaining, were able to rush the field-goal unit onto the field. But Furbank pulled the ball left.I know I rushed the kick a little bit and thats 100 percent on me, he said.It was the 17th straight road loss for Virginia, and leaves first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall still looking for his 100th career win. He was 99-43 during his 11-year tenure at BYU.Im proud of the way my team played today, he said. They fought hard from the beginning and I think they took a step forward again today.Virginia opened the scoring with first quarter drives of 12 and 13 plays. The first led to a 23-yard field goal from Furbank. It was the sophomores first football kick. He played soccer at Division III Randollph-Macon before transferring to Virginia.ddddddddddddA 90-yard drive ended in a 9-yard touchdown run by Albert Reid that made it 10-0.UConn drove to the Virginia 2-yard line in the second quarter but had to settle for a 21-yard field goal. The Huskies missed several second-half scoring chances.A third-quarter UConn drive was thwarted when Juan Thornhill out-dueled Husky receiver Noel Thomas in the end zone and came up with an interception. A fourth-quarter drive ended when Arkeel Newsome dropped a pitch and the fumble was recovered by Virginias Andrew Brown. But Huskies got the ball right back when Jamar Summers intercepted Benkert. It was the first pick of the season for Summers, who had eight last season. The Huskies, helped by interference and face mask calls on Virginia, drove 37-yards in nine plays to tie the game. Shirreffs ran the ball in on a sweep from a yard out.Virginia then drove to the UConn 24-yard line, but a run by Albert Reid on fourth-and-1 came up short. It was painful, thats all I can say, Reid said. There were plenty of plays on the field that we didnt make.Newsome ran 13 times for 90 yards for UConn. Benkert completed 23 of 42 passes for 241 yards. Reid (73 yards) and running back Taquan Mizzell (66) combined for 139 yards.THE TAKEAWAYVIRGINIA: The Cavaliers continued to make too many mistakes to win. They were penalized 10 times for 91 yards.
